Editor's ruling not necessary for letter publication

To the Editor:

After a hiatus of one semester during which letters to the editor were not published—they were, sight unseen, categorically refused—we now have a policy that not only welcomes such letters, but positively encourages them.

This returns us to the status quo ante. One way to create at least the illusion that we are making progress is to nullify a step backwards. Go UB.

The policy "upholds the right of UB constituencies to voice a wide range of opinion, whether or not the administration agrees with them" [quoted with economy of speech].

The Reporter champions the right of free speech, subject to some reasonable standards: no lewd language, no ad hominem attacks, no PRB (President's Review Board) matters. The restrictions are not limited to this, and a fair reading of their intent is to add "or other violations of careful behavior a civilized society has the right to expect."

Having all this spelled out, the editor will make a recommendation as to whether or not a letter is fit to print. I would have much preferred, and it follows more logically from the preambles, the conclusion: Letters satisfying the requirements of content and the standards specified in this policy will be published. Period.

SOM recognized for effort for Toys for Tots

To the Editor:

Under auspices of the Residence Hall Association, each hall council raises money every year during the fall semester to buy toys for the Toys for Tots Foundation to help bring a smile to a child in the Buffalo area.

This past fall, the UB Bulls chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary issued an open challenge to all academic departments at UB to join the fund- and toy-raising effort.

NRHH would like to recognize the School of Management and its coordinator, Marie Gersitz, as the winner of the first annual academic departmental challenge.

NRHH also would like to thank Paul Allaire, director of the SOM Career Resources Center; Philip R Perry, associate dean for international programs in SOM; and Kenneth A. Kim, assistant professor, finance and managerial economics, for their individual donations of $100, as well as all students, staff and faculty university-wide who helped bring a smile to children in the Buffalo area this past holiday season.

Thank you to all who participated in any way.
