Former vice president and environmental activist Al Gore will present a second lecture at UB on April 27 as part of the university's 20th annual Distinguished Speakers Series.

In addition to the previously scheduled evening lecture, Gore will speak to UB students and Buffalo-area high school students during a special, school-time lecture scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. (doors will open at 11:45 a.m.) in Alumni Arena, North Campus. Seating capacity is 6,500.

Tickets for Gore's public lecture at 8 p.m. have been hot sellers since his appearance was announced in September. With "An Inconvenient Truth," the documentary film based on Gore's book "Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit" recently winning an Academy Award, interest in Gore's lecture intensified. The evening lecture sold out last week, and UB extended an invitation to Gore for a second lecture.

"UB is thrilled and honored that Al Gore accepted our invitation to present a second lecture when he visits in April," said President John B. Simpson.

"Interest in hearing his message has been very strong among UB students, particularly in conjunction with this semester's observance of UB's environmental commitment under the theme 'A Greener Shade of Blue,'" Simpson noted. "And in line with the university's commitment to support pre-K through 12 education, we wish to extend an invitation to area high school students to be our guests at the afternoon lecture."

To encourage area high school students' involvement in science and environmental conservation, UB is offering up to 45 complimentary tickets per school, available on a first-come basis while the tickets last. The deadline for submitting ticket requests is April 10.

Additional tickets may be requested, but availability of extra tickets will not be known until after the April 10 deadline. Approximately 3,000 tickets will be available for high school students. Schools will be responsible for providing transportation for students to and from the event. On-campus parking will be provided for school buses and other official school vehicles.

Requests for tickets should be made by a school's principal, or one faculty or staff member who will act as the sole liaison for their school and will distribute the students' tickets. Ticket request forms can be downloaded at http://www.buffalo.edu/yourub/green.

UB undergraduates and GSA-represented graduate students also are eligible to receive one free ticket to the 12:30 p.m. lecture, while supplies last. A valid UB ID will be required to pick up the ticket. Distribution information will occur on specified dates and times to be announced in the Reporter and at http://www.student-affairs.buffalo.edu/special/tickets.shtml.
