Firmin book receives national praise
The book "Mudman: The Odyssey of Kim Jones" (MIT University Press, 2007), a monograph edited by Sandra Q. Firmin, curator, UB Art Gallery, and Julie Joyce, director of Luckman Art Gallery, California State University at Los Angeles, is receiving national praise.
The book was written to accompany Jones's first retrospective exhibition, "Kim Jones: A Retrospective," which originated at the UB Art Gallery last October and is now on view at the Luckman Gallery through May 19.
It is called "excellent" by The Los Angeles Times, and was reviewed this month in Bookforum, which described it as "a fascinating overview of the career of an artist who deserves not just notice, but acclaim." He is receiving it now. Jones will present his work at the 2007 Venice Biennale.
"Mudman" includes essays by Firmin and Joyce; Robert Storr, dean of the Yale University Art School and director of the Venice Biennale; and Kristine Styles, professor and director of undergraduate studies, Department of Art, Art History and Visual Studies, Duke University.
The book and exhibition offer the first comprehensive survey of Jones's installations and drawings from the 1970s to the present, but in particular of his performances as Mudman, a shaman-like figure covered with mud and organic substances and wearing a cumbersome structure of mud and sticks on his back, who speaks to the experience of destruction and war in the 20th century.
Cahn essays featured in new book
"Feminist Waves, Feminist Generations: Life Stories From the Academy" (Kilden: Oslo, 2007) features essays contributed by Susan K. Cahn, associate professor, Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences.
Her essay, written with Anne Firor Scott, Sara Evans and Elizabeth Faue, is titled "Women's History in the New Millennium: A Conversation Across Three Generations."
The book discusses the "2.5 generation"an alternative to binary feminist categories. It challenges the static figuring of feminist generations that positions the second wave of feminist scholars against a homogeneous third wave.
Based on life stories from contemporary feminist scholars from throughout the world, the contributors emphasize how feminism develops unevenly over time and across institutions and, ultimately, offers a new paradigm for theorizing the intersections between generations and feminist waves of thought.
Newman to discuss book at "UB at Noon"
Jerry Newman, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and chair of the Department of Organizations and Human Resources in the School of Management, will discuss his new book, "My Secret Life on the McJob: Lessons From Behind the Counter Guaranteed to Supersize Any Management Style," during the "UB at Noon...Downtown" presentation to be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. June 6 in Chef's Restaurant, 291 Seneca St., Buffalo.
The presentation is sponsored by the UB Alumni Association and the School of Management Alumni Association.
Newman's book, released last December, takes readers behind the scenes at Burger King, Wendy's and several other fast-food restaurants to serve up keen insights into management techniques that can be applied to companies with 6,000 locations or just six employees.
Check-in for the presentation will begin at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $15 for the buffet lunch, which will be served promptly at noon, and $33 for lunch and a copy of "My Secret Life on the McJob."
