Carl V. Granger, professor of rehabilitation medicine and executive director of the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation at UB, received the Distinguished Member Award from the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) at the AAP's annual meeting held last month in Puerto Rico. The Distinguished Member Award, the highest award that is given by the AAP, is reserved for the most distinguished physiatrist: an individual who is of international status; is recognized as a major contributor to the field by virtue of teaching, research and scholarly publications; and is noted for dedicated service to the AAP.

Mattie L. Rhodes, associate professor of nursing, received a Professional Award at the 47th annual Sojourner Truth Award and Founder's Day Luncheon on Sunday. Rhodes was one of seven people recognized for excelling in school, business and community service.

Visual Media Services, a unit of Computing and Information Technology, recently received awards in three international competitions for the production of the new student computer orientation videos. VMS received the Gold Award in the Technology/Computer Training category as part of the Aurora Awards competition. It also received two Awards of Distinction for projects that exceed industry standards in quality and excellence in the Instructional and College or University categories as part of the Communicator Awards competition. The Videographer Awards honored VMS with an Award of Distinction in the training category and an honorable mention in the New Media/Streaming category. The new student computer orientation videos were developed as part of an online student IT orientation course designed to introduce new students to campus IT requirements, uses and resources. Rick Lesniak, director, Academic Services, Computing and Information Technology (ASCIT), produced the videos along with writer Jody Latvis, coordinator for special services and events, ASCIT. Members of Visual Media Services who contributed to the award-winning videos are John Wild, group leader, director/editor; Larry Scott, media specialist, videography; Martha Greatrix, media specialist, graphics and videography; Laurie Yarnes, graphic designer, graphics; and Jim Ulrich, photographer, photography.

Mehdi Ahmadizadeh, a graduate research assistant in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, won the top prize in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's 2006 graduate student paper competition. His paper is entitled "A Comparison Between Passive and Semi-Active Structural Control Systems Using Viscous Fluid Dampers." Ahmadizadeh is working under the director of Gilberto Mosqueda, assistant professor of civil, structural and environmental Engineering.
