McMurray joins STOR staff

Thad G. McMurray has been named associate intellectual property manager for the Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach (STOR) at UB.

McMurray focuses on the management of intellectual property developed at the university, with primary responsibility in overseeing the preparation and prosecution of patent applications for UB technology. He works with STOR commercialization managers and UB faculty members to prepare sponsored-research agreements, licenses and material-transfer agreements that foster technology-transfer opportunities between UB and industry. He also applies his technical and intellectual-property background to the assessment of new technology disclosures submitted by UB researchers.

"Thad's breadth of experience in science, intellectual property and licensing will strengthen our commercialization efforts and will help us develop practices that ensure a smooth transition of technology from the lab to the marketplace," said Jeff Dunbar, director of intellectual property at STOR. "His clients include licensors and licensees, independent inventors, large and small corporations, and educational institutions, which affords Thad a comprehensive view of intellectual property and licensing practice."

McMurray previously was an associate with Ohlandt, Greeley, Ruggiero & Perle LLP in Stamford, Conn., where he specialized in opinion work and patent preparation and prosecution in mechanical arts, chemical processes and composition, and biological sciences. In that capacity, he represented several Fortune 500 corporations and many small and mid-sized companies in securing patent protection in the United States and throughout the world. He also has previous experience as an intellectual property graduate assistant with STOR.

McMurray earned a bachelor of science in biology from the University of Houston and a law degree with a concentration in intellectual property law from the UB Law School. He is admitted in New York and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

UB donates to Bluffton memorial fund

The UB baseball team and Division of Athletics staff recently donated $635 to the University of Bluffton baseball team for its "Living Memorial" fund.

The fund was established in memory of several team members who died as a result of a horrific bus accident on March 2 outside of Atlanta. The team bus plunged off of an interstate ramp, killing four team members, the driver and his wife, and injuring several other athletes. The team had been traveling from its campus in Bluffton, Ohio, to its first game of the season in Sarasota, Fla.

"Baseball teams at all levels throughout the country spend many hours every weekend traveling by bus to play games," said UB head baseball coach Ron Torgalski. "To have such a tragedy like this strike really hits home for our team. As a baseball team and an athletics department, we wanted to do something concrete to show our support for the Bluffton University baseball team."

"This tragedy could have happened to anyone in college athletics," said Warde Manuel, director of athletics. "We take pride in helping fellow student-athletes and coaches—especially in moments such as this. I'm grateful to our baseball team and athletics staff for going the extra mile in reaching out to Bluffton," said Manuel.
