A new farmer's market featuring local sellers of fruits, vegetables and preserves will open June 30 in the parking lot north of Allen Hall on the South Campus.
The University Community Farmers Market will operate every Saturdayrain or shinefrom 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Oct. 13.
The market, a collaboration between the UB Office of Community Relations, University Heights Collaborative and Eggertsville Community Organization, will provide area residents a quick, convenient and fun place to find fresh, nutritious and locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as delicious jellies and jams.
"There's a great deal of enthusiasm out there for this project," says Pamela Beal, neighborhood outreach coordinator for the Office of Community Relations. "It's a great opportunity for collaboration with the local community on an event that adds to the assets of the neighborhood."
The market came together through the cooperation of the university community and UB, adds Cheryl Pavlov-Shapiro of the University Heights Collaborative. UB helped speed the process that brought about the market, she says, and supplied a location large enough to host the event.
"We both needed each other," she says, noting that local neighborhood volunteers will run the market. "We needed the resources and UB needed the community, and together we've really been able to take off."
Vendors who already have made commitments to the market include florist Chris Seisz, Ieraci Farm of Lewiston and Independence Hill Farm of Friendship for vegetables and fruits, Honey Bee Farm of North Tonawanda for honey, and Nancy Bryant of Independence Hill Farm for jams and jellies.
