Athletes of the Week

Daniel Bell, goalkeeper of the men's soccer team, recorded three shutouts and lowered his Mid-American Conference goals-against average to 0.40 in the Bulls' victories over Cornell, St. Bonaventure and Canisius.

Caitlin Higgins of the women's soccer team scored two goals—the first of her collegiate career—in UB's 3-2 victory over rival Canisius on Friday night.

Football

Northern Illinois 31, UB 13

Senior tailback Garrett Wolfe, the nation's leading rusher, had 263 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns to lead Northern Illinois to a 31-13 victory over UB before 21,117 fans at Huskie Stadium.

The Huskies stormed out of the gate, stopping the Bulls on three downs and then scoring on two plays, the second of which was a 49-yard touchdown run by Wolfe.

After again stopping the Bulls, the Huskies extended the lead to 14-0 on a five-yard touchdown pass from Phil Horvath to Marcus Perez. Wolfe racked up more than 100 yards on the Huskies' first two series.

With the Huskies leading 17-0 at the start of the second half, the Bulls executed their finest drive of the season—91 yards on 15 plays, with senior Steven King going the final yard to pay dirt to cap the drive.

The Huskies extended their lead to 31-7 before Bulls quarterback Drew Willy connected on his first touchdown pass of the season, hitting Terrance Breaux from 28 yards out to cap an 80-yard drive on five plays.

The Bulls will travel to Auburn—currently ranked second in the Associated Press poll—for Saturday's match-up with the Tigers.

Soccer

MEN'S

UB 1, Cornell 0 (2OT)
UB 1, St. Bonaventure 0
UB 4, Canisius 0

UB battled Ivy League opponent Cornell for 103 minutes to a 0-0 draw on Sept. 13, but then capitalized on a late break when senior captain Andrae Clarke rifled a shot from 10 yards past a diving Cornell goalkeeper to take the 1-0 victory.

UB scored a 1-0 shutout victory over Western New York foe St. Bonaventure on Friday. The Bulls broke out of the 0-0 draw in the 74th minute when senior midfielder Mat Wilkinson scored his first collegiate goal.

The Bulls then dismantled local rival Canisius, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls were led by sophomore striker Jon Martin, who came off the bench to net two goals late in the second half, putting the game out of reach for the Golden Griffins.

The Bulls will host Duquesne at 7 p.m. Friday in UB Stadium.

WOMEN'S

UB 3, Canisius 2

UB prevailed in a physical, non-league contest Friday afternoon, scoring a 3-2 triumph over the Canisius Golden Griffins.

UB freshman Caitlin Higgins scored two goals, while sophomore Brooke McCalla picked up two assists and junior Heidi Griffiths added a goal and an assist for the Bulls.

UB will open the Mid-American Conference portion of its schedule tomorrow at Miami (OH).

Volleyball

UB put its name in the school record book on Sept. 12 with its 3-1 victory over crosstown rival Canisius in Alumni Arena. The Bulls achieved their 10th straight win of the season, surpassing the record for victories in a row as a Division I school. The old record of nine was set by the 1995 squad.

However, the 10-match winning streak fell by the wayside on Friday when St. John's defeated the Bulls, 3-0, at the Cornell Invitational. The Bulls failed to win any matches at the invitational, also falling to Binghamton in a five-game match and to Cornell, 3-0.

The Bulls (10-5) will open conference play at home this weekend against Kent State and Ohio.

Cross Country

Veith, Leonard win individual titles at Toledo Invitational

UB put forth a strong team effort on Saturday at the Toledo Invitational meet. The men won the team title with a perfect 15 points with the top five finishers. The UB women scored 60 points to finish second to Northwestern.

Sophomore Mary Veith won the women's 5K race in 17:48, cutting more than a minute from her time on the same course last season as a freshman.

In the men's 8K race, senior Andy Leonard crossed the finish line first in 25:55.

The Bulls will host the UB Stampede Invitational on Saturday at Beaver Island State Park. The first race is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

Tennis

MEN'S

Rockman becomes all-time singles-wins leader

Senior Mike Rockman became the leader in singles wins in UB team history over the weekend when he turned in an undefeated 3-0 singles record at the Dartmouth Volkl Shootout.

Rockman, playing in the number-one slot, powered past Tufts' Corey Keller, 6-1, 6-1, on Saturday to pass former player and current UB assistant coach Nick Zieziula to claim the top spot with his 70th career victory. He also defeated Williams College's Daniel Greenberg, 6-3, 6-1 for number 71.

The Bulls completed the weekend winning 12 of 15 singles matches and seven of the nine doubles matches.

WOMEN'S

Bulls see top competition at Princeton Invitational

UB concluded play in the three-day Princeton Invitational on Sunday, picking up 16 singles and seven doubles victories against top-notch competition, including Ohio State, Rutgers, Yale and the host Tigers.

The Bulls are next in action on Sept. 30 at the NiagaraInvitational.
