The end-of-the-semester offerings by the music department also will include a recital by soprano Deborah Lifton, a winner of the 2007 Joy in Singing Foundation Competition, as well as performances by student groups.

D’Amato, praised as “supple” by The New York Times and “an expert pianist” by the Boston Globe, will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 27 in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

Recitals by faculty members Roland Martin and Alison d’Amato are among the offerings as the Department of Music wraps up the fall semester.

Martin, who has given recitals throughout the United States and worldwide, will present a classical, holiday-themed concert at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 in Lippes Concert Hall.

Tickets for both recitals are $5; UB students are free with ID.

D’Amato’s program, titled “Stories Through the Soundboard: Characters in Piano and Chamber Music,” will feature fellow music faculty members Tony Arnold, soprano; Cheryl Gobbetti Hoffman, flute; and Jean Kopperud, clarinet.

D’Amato has built a reputation as a dynamic, innovative and versatile musician. She was a pianist at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2001 and 2002, and was awarded the Grace B. Jackson Prize acknowledging her “extraordinary commitment of talent and energy.” Her recent recital with acclaimed Canadian mezzo-soprano Lynne McMurtry earned her a rave review in the Toronto Star.

Director of music for St. Joseph's University Church in Buffalo, Martin teaches organ, harpsichord and piano at UB. He also is an accomplished composer and conductor, and is in great demand as an accompanist, with engagements in Bermuda, Canada and throughout the eastern United States, including several Metropolitan National Opera competitions.

Soprano Deborah Lifton, a winner of the David Adams Art Song Competition, as well as the Joy in Singing Foundation Competition, will give a recital at 8 p.m. Nov. 30 in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus. She will be accompanied by pianist Charis Dimaris, associate professor of piano and collaborative studies at Ithaca College who has presented numerous solo recitals, collaborated in chamber music concerts and been featured as soloist with orchestras throughout Europe, Turkey, Russia, Brazil and the U.S.

Tickets are $5; UB students are free with ID.

Lifton is emerging as one of today’s most interesting and versatile young singers. She has sung with Mercury Opera Rochester, the Natchez

Opera Festival, the Ash Lawn-Highland Festival, Rising Sun Opera

Theatre, the Aspen Music Festival, the Bronx Opera Company and the

University of Michigan Opera Theatre. An assistant professor of voice at Ithaca College, she recently made her Merkin Hall debut with a recital of 20th-century songs.

The Department of Music also will present numerous student concerts through the end of the semester. All concerts are free and open to the public.
