The National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York, formerly the National Conference of Community and Justice, will honor WBFO-FM 88.7, UB’s National Public Radio affiliate, at its annual Community Leaders Awards Luncheon being held today in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The station is being recognized for such local programs as the Meet the Author series and the recently launched Buffalo Music Project, its broadcasts of community forums and listener commentaries, and its sponsorship of local civic and cultural events.

David Dougherty, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been awarded the honorary degree of fellow in the American College of Osteopathic Internists. He is being cited for his professional accomplishments, as well as teaching, research and community service. A member of Buffalo Medical Group since 1994, Dougherty also is program director and chief of the Osteopathic Medicine Residency Program for the Catholic Health System.

Brenda Moore, associate professor in the Department of Sociology, College of Arts and Sciences, is a member of the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans for the Department of Veterans Affairs, a panel that advises the VA on issues and programs affecting women veterans.

"La Vita en Volo," the Italian translation of "Life in the Air: Surviving the New Culture of Air Travel," the 2001 book by Mark Gottdiener, professor in the Department of Sociology, has been published by Edizione Goliardiche (Milan). The book, originally published by Rowman and Littlefield (Boulder, Colo.), examines the changes affecting airports and air space today—from overcrowding and abusive passengers to the extensive delays and cancellations and how travelers spend inordinately long periods of time while waiting to make their next connection.

John J. Wood, associate vice provost in the Office of International Education, has been named to the board of directors of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Buffalo.

Christine Ambrosone, research professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, School of Public Health and Health Professions, and chair of the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has been appointed to a five-year term on the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Board of Scientific Advisors. The NCI board assists and advises the NCI director on all aspects of the extramural programs, including scientific policies, and provides concept review of research and resource activities.
