A memorial service for the victims of Thursday's shooting at Northern Illinois University will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Theater, North Campus.

The Division of Student Affairs also is distributing red and black ribbons—NIU's school colors—in 150 Student Union and the Student Union Lobby. Students also may sign a condolence card in the Student Union that will be sent to Northern Illinois. Click here to view a listing of campus resources in response to the NIU tragedy.

A former graduate student at NIU opened fire in a lecture as a class was ending about 3 p.m. Thursday. He then took his own life.

President John B. Simpson issued a statement on Thursday on behalf of the UB community.

"Today the entire UB community is thinking of our friends and colleagues at Northern Illinois University," Simpson said. "The tragedy that occurred there yesterday afternoon is, unfortunately, another sad reminder that our universities, while places of openness and learning, are not immune from the acts of those who wish to do harm.

"My deepest sympathies go out to the victims and their families, President John Peters, and the entire Northern Illinois University community," he said. "As fellow members of the Mid-American Conference, there are many strong ties between our institutions. UB stands ready to help in any way we can."

Simpson noted that UB has established policies and procedures to respond to any campus emergencies. Click here to view the procedures.
