For the second consecutive year, a team of high school students involved in UB’s Biomedical STEP program and Buffalo Prep program will compete in the National Science Bowl, a high-profile academic competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The team includes captain Bianca Coleman and Kerris Sease, both of Nardin Academy; Queenosob Hashi and Lesthia Isaacs of City Honors High School; and Candace Desta of Nichols School. Coleman and Sease were members of last year’s team.

Clara M. Ambrus, research professor in the Department of Gynecology-Obstetrics, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has received the Courage to Care Award from the Anti-Defamation League for her efforts more than 60 years ago to rescue Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary. During her first year of medical school in 1944, Ambrus, who is Christian, bribed Nazi guards at camps and ghettos to release prisoners, who were hidden and cared for by her family until the end of World War II.

Adam Keller Ashton, clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has received the Department of Psychiatry’s 2007 award for outstanding contributions to medical student education. Board-certified in geriatric and adult psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Ashton teaches second-year medical students and residents.

Kim Griswold, assistant professor of family medicine and psychiatry, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and founder of the Refugee Cultural Competency Training Program at Niagara Family Health Center, has won a Global Citizen Award for her service to refugees and immigrants, and for building bridges across cultures.

UB has received an honorable mention from the Institute of International Education in its seventh annual Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education. The awards recognize the American colleges and universities with the top programs in international education.

Lt. Chris Bartolomei has been named Employee of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2007 by University Police for his work on University Police’s recent accreditation by the New York state Division of Criminal Justice Services. Officers Guy Harvey and Bruce Pepi received honorable mention for their work resulting in felony charges being filed in a case involving a stolen rental vehicle.
