A national search for the dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions (SPHHP) has begun with the appointment of a search committee that includes members of the Western New York health care community.

The committee is seeking a successor to Maurizio Trevisan, founding dean of the school who left UB in October to assume the position of vice chancellor and chief executive officer of the University of Nevada Health Sciences System, the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE).

Lynn Kozlowski, professor and chair of the Department of Health Behavior, SPHHP, is serving as interim dean.

“We plan to recruit an individual with stellar academic credentials who will lead the ongoing initiatives of the faculty of the school to move its programs into the top tier,” said David L. Dunn, vice president for health sciences who appointed the members of the search committee. “I am sure we will attract a large number of excellent candidates, and I look forward to the committee’s recommendations.”

Richard Buchanan, dean, School of Dental Medicine, will serve as chair of the panel.

Other members of the committee are Anthony Billittier, Erie County health commissioner; Nancy Campbell-Heider, associate professor and chair, Division of Health Promotion and Development, School of Nursing; Brian Carter, dean, School of Architecture and Planning; R. Lorraine Collins, professor of health behavior and associate dean for research, SPHHP; Gerard J. Connors, director, UB’s Research Institute on Addictions; Arthur Goshen, a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, SPHHP; Ellen E. Grant, vice president for community affairs, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York.

Also, Alan Hutson, professor and chair, Department of Biostatistics, SPHHP; Sheila K. Kee, associate commissioner, state Department of Health; David H. Klein, CEO, Lifetime Health; Marilyn M. Kramer, associate librarian, University Libraries, who is serving as the representative of the Faculty Senate; Susan M. Nochajski, clinical associate professor, Department of Rehabilitation Science, SPHHP; Michael F. Noe, associate dean for community relations and clinical affairs, SPHHP; Joseph A. Paladino, clinical professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Also, Peter A. Rogerson, professor and chair, Department of Geography, College of Arts and Sciences; Thomas C. Rosenthal, professor and chair, Department of Family Medicine, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; Nancy J. Smyth, dean, School of Social Work; Irene S. Snow, medical director, Buffalo Medical Group; Jean Wactawski-Wende, professor and associate chair, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, SPHHP; and Scott C. White, associate professor of exercise and nutrition science and associate dean for faculty affairs, SPHHP.

UB also has hired a consultant, Ilene Nagel of Russell Reynolds Associates, to assist in the search. Nagel has played a key role in most, if not all, of the recent administrative searches at UB, including the provostal and vice presidential searches, and searches for other dean positions, including the dean of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and the recently completed search for the dean of the School of Nursing.
