Team to represent School of Management in national competition
A team of four UB MBA students will advance to a national competition in Washington, D.C., after winning the UB MBA Second-Year Case Competition.
The winning team, Alexandra Andrianova of Amherst, Jonathan Davis of Buffalo, David Hansen of Amherst, and Timothy Silverstein of Tonawanda, was chosen from among four teams of finalists who presented the results of their case analyses at the UB School of Management.
Judges evaluated participants on the quality of their analyses and use of case data, the creativity and clarity of their recommendations, the quality and detail of their implementation plans, the quality and style of their oral presentations, and the quality of their question-and-answer responses.
The winning team will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the 12th Annual George Washington University/KPMG MBA Case Competition on March 28 and 29.
The competition was sponsored by Columbus McKinnon Corp., Ernst & Young LLP and Moog, Inc. The judges for the final round of the competition were School of Management Dean John M. Thomas; Joseph Bell, general manager, Moog; Karen Howard, vice president of finance and CFO, Columbus McKinnon; and Michael Murray, partner, Ernst & Young.
Greiner to discuss history of UB as part of UB Downtown
Former UB president and provost and current law professor William R. Greiner will discuss the new book, “Location, Location, Location . . . a Special History of the University of/at Buffalo,” that he co-authored with SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Thomas E. Headrick at UB Downtown to be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. April 2 in Chef’s Restaurant.
The program is sponsored by the UB Alumni Association and the UB School of Management Alumni Association.
Greiner, who joined the UB Law School faculty in 1967, will provide a glimpse into UB's past and will detail the events and the planning that resulted in the university's move to Amherst rather than to the Buffalo waterfront or an expanded South Campus.
The cost of the program is $16 per person and $14 for UB Alumni Association or School of Management Alumni Association members, who may bring one guest at the member cost. Copies of the book are available for $10 and $12.50.

Previous UB Downtown programs have sold out. Attendees are encouraged to register early.
“One Night of Queen” to be performed in CFA
The UB Center for the Arts will present “One Night of Queen” performed by Gary Mullen & The Works at 8 p.m. on April 6 in the Mainstage theater in the Center for the Arts on the North Campus.
One Night of Queen celebrates the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen.
When Gary Mullen won the British television show "Stars In Their Eyes" Grand Finale in 2000 (receiving a record 864,000 votes from viewers) as Freddie Mercury, he began a journey that has so far taken him to theaters and concert halls in England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Holland and New Zealand. He now is touring of more than 40 cities across the United States.

School of Management names case competition winners
A team of four students in the School of Management will share a $3,000 prize as winners of the second annual On Target Undergraduate Case Competition.
Bevano Lianto of Indonesia, Andrew Widjaja of Indonesia, John Willett of Williamsville and Qiliang Yu of Brooklyn comprised the winning team.
The competition, sponsored by Target Corp., is intended to help undergraduate students hone their analytical, problem-solving and teamwork skills.
Twenty teams representing 77 students entered the competition. For the final round of the competition on March 1, the top five teams presented their analyses and recommendations for a case involving how Target could effectively staff its stores with teams as it enters the competitive labor market of 2010.
Six individuals from Target Corp. served as judges for the final presentations: Bill Hall, vice president for upstate New York, central Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh and West Virginia; Randy Joseph, district team leader; Steve Robinson, district assets protection team leader; John Cardarella, human resources business partner; Andrea Vaughn, human resources business partner; and Ben Gregory, store team leader.
Anderson Gallery to hold collagraph relief printing workshops
Artist, printmaker and educator Kathleen Sherin will conduct two collagraph relief printing workshops for families and children from 1-2 p.m. and 2-3 p.m. April 6 in second floor education classroom of UB’s Anderson Gallery.
Participants will create original three-color prints from cardboard plates made of different levels and surface textures. The workshops are presented in conjunction with the exhibit “Sam Francis: Black and White,” drawn from the permanent collection of the UB Art Galleries and featuring the lithographs of artist and printmaker Sam Francis.
The workshop sessions are open to the public and free of charge. Space is limited. Children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Ingalls heads WBFO 88.7FM advisory board
WBFO 88.7 FM, a public service of UB and the area's most-listened-to NPR station, has announced the appointment of Donald R. Ingalls, vice president of government affairs for HealthNow of New York Inc., as chair of its advisory board by Marsha S. Henderson, UB vice president for external affairs.
WBFO’s Advisory Board consists of community leaders from the Buffalo Niagara region and UB faculty members who are committed to the concept and purposes of public radio. Not only do they support the mission and goals of WBFO, but they also actively serve as advocates and foster philanthropy, according to Carole Smith Petro, associate vice president and WBFO general manager.
“Don will bring his longtime passion for public radio and his deep conviction of its importance in public discourse to this role as chair,” Petro said. "We will benefit from his guidance as well as his sheer enthusiasm.”
Ingalls joined HealthNow, the parent of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York and BlueShield of Northeastern New York, in August 1999, and is responsible for government relations at the federal, state and local levels.
Prior to joining HealthNow, he was executive director of CMG Health/Magellan Behavioral Health in Buffalo for six years and responsible for the clinical and administrative aspects of managing behavioral health care on a full-risk, capitation basis for 650,000 members in seven HMOs.
Over a 12-year period, Ingalls held a number of executive positions with Community Health Care Plan, a staff model HMO in Connecticut, including vice president of marketing and public affairs. While in Connecticut, he initiated and chaired the legislative committee of the Association of Connecticut HMOs.
A resident of Buffalo, he serves as treasurer of the NYS Health Plan Association; a board member of the Northwest Buffalo Community Health Center, of which he is past president; a member of the local advisory committee for the Local Initiative Support Corporation’s (LISC) Buffalo program, a member of the WBFO Advisory Board, and a member of the advisory committee for the Center for Children and Families at the University at Buffalo.

“Strengthening education” is subject of GSE program
Arthur E. Levine, president of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation, will be the keynote speaker at a Graduate School of Education Research Symposium to be held April 10 in the Buffalo/Niagara Marriott, 1340 Millersport Hwy., Amherst.
A pioneer for equity and equality within K-12 and higher education and an advocate for opportunity and growth within the field of education, Levine’s 1 p.m. lecture is titled, “Strengthening education: Connecting students, policy, and educators.” The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Levine’s work focuses on equity in K-12 education and higher education, education reform and education policy. He has served as president of Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as president of Bradford University. His most recent scholarship, a four-year study of America’s education schools, has resulted in three major reports, “Educating Leaders,” “Educating Teachers” and “Educating Researchers.”
He is the author or co-author of “When Hope and Fear Collide: A Portrait of Today’s College Student,” “Beating the Odds: How the Poor Get to College,” “Higher Learning in America; Shaping Higher Education’s Future,” When Dreams and Heroes Died: A Portrait of Today’s College Students,” “Handbook on Undergraduate Curriculum; Quest for Common Learning” and Why Innovation Fails.
St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre to perform April 2
The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre will perform “Giselle” at 8 p.m. on April 2 in the Mainstage theater, Center for the Arts, UB North Campus. The performance is sponsored by KeyBank.
The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre was founded as the first Theater of Ballet in Russia under the management of the People's Artist of Russia, Peter Gusev, in 1966. Now under the direction of Yuri Petukhov, the company performs modern ballet, as well as classic ballet pieces.
“Giselle” is one of classical ballet's notable and romantic works. It was first performed in France at the Paris Opera in 1841 and one year later premiered in St. Petersburg where the ballet was an immediate success. “Giselle” remains a benchmark for ballerinas, requiring technical skill and great acting ability. It also continues to be a favorite among audiences worldwide.
