Conference on U.S.-Canadian border issues to begin today

“Crossing Borders 2008,” an annual multidisciplinary student conference on the United States, Canada and border issues, will take place today and tomorrow at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society and the Center for Tomorrow, North Campus.

The conference, hosted by UB in conjunction with the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo and the U.S. Consulate in Toronto, will focus on Canadian-American relations and comparative studies of the experience of the two countries. Admission is free and open to the public.

An opening reception will take place at 5:30 p.m. today in the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, 25 Nottingham Court, Buffalo. President John B. Simpson and Bruce D. McCombe, SUNY Distinguished Professor and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will make brief remarks, followed by a talk by Lauren Rachlin of Hodgson Russ LLP titled, "Regional or Binational: Call It What You Will. It's Our Future or We Have None."

The conference will continue tomorrow with registration at 8 a.m. in the Center for Tomorrow. Panels will be held all day on such topics as the history of cross-border relations, comparing immigration and refugee policies in Canada and the U.S., cross-border tourism and transportation, fighting crime across the border, securing the border and comparing foreign policies across the border.

The keynote speaker will be Col. Keith A. Swensen of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), who will reflect upon 50 years of cooperation between Canada and the U.S. in the air defense of the continent. Swensen will speak at a luncheon beginning at noon tomorrow in the Center for Tomorrow.
