Meyer named biomaterials fellow
Anne E. Meyer, director of the Buffalo site of the Industry/University Center for Biosurfaces (IUCB), has been named a fellow in biomaterials science and engineering by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE).
The IUSBSE is a body that brings together national and multinational groups dedicated to the advancement of biomaterials, surgical implants, prosthetics, artificial organs, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Meyer was nominated for the fellowship distinction by the Society for Biomaterials, of which she served as president in 2004-05.
Fellows are recognized for their professional excellence and achievements in the field of biomaterials science and engineering, and are announced only at the World Biomaterials Congress, which is held every four years. Meyer was appointed at the eighth world congress, which was held recently in Amsterdam.
There are approximately 200 fellows of biomaterials science and engineering worldwide; fewer than 20 are women.
A UB faculty member since 1986, Meyer also is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and currently serves on that organization's board of directors as chair of the Council of Societies.
On the basis of her work with AIMBE, she recently was elected to serve on the board of the American Association of Engineering Societies, beginning in December 2008.
In addition to her position with the IUCB, Meyer is research associate professor of oral diagnostic sciences in the UB School of Dental Medicine and serves as interim associate dean for research for the dental school. She holds an adjunct position in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and is the academic director of the REMeDI (Regulatory Environment of Medical Devices and Implants) certificate program offered by UB's Division of Continuing and Professional Studies.
Dental research association to honor Fischman
Stuart Fischman, professor emeritus of oral diagnostic sciences in the School of Dental Medicine, will receive the 2008 Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research Award from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) at its 86th General Session and Exhibition, to be held July 2-5 in Toronto.
The award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
Fischman is being recognized for “outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to our knowledge of the mechanisms, efficacy or safety of drugs used in dentistry.”
Fischman has made significant contributions to the evaluation of drugs to prevent or treat dental caries and periodontal disease. He has designed and managed many clinical trials and has published more than 100 articles in research journals.
Although retired, he continues to conduct research, including the clinical evaluation of dentifrices and mouth rinses, the management of ulcerative diseases of the oral mucosa and the oral manifestations of HIV disease. He serves as a consultant to several manufacturers of oral health products and to the New York State AIDS Institute.
Retired director of dentistry at the Erie County Medical Center, Fischman continues to coordinate the oral health care program for the AIDS Designated Center at the medical center. He received the Clinical Excellence Award from the New York State AIDS Institute in 1998.
Named a distinguished alumnus by the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Fischman is a diplomat of the American Boards of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine and previously was a Lady Davis Fellow and a Forcheimer Fellow at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
