Tim Hortons to open on North Campus

Tim Horton aficionados soon will not have to leave campus to get a fix of their favorite drug. Two outlets of the popular coffee shop are scheduled to open on the North Campus in time for the first day of classes in August, Campus Dining & Shops (CDS) has announced.

Tim Hortons outlets will open in Putnam’s in the Student Union and in the Alfiero Center in Jacobs Management Center. Also scheduled to open in Putnam’s is Jump Asian, which will serve Asian cuisine. The Tim Hortons and Jump Asian restaurants at Putnam’s will be located on the current site of Freshëns. The Freshëns operation will move to the other side of the registers, along the wall of the world mural.

The new eateries are a direct result of feedback supplied by customer focus groups in an effort to suit the ever-changing palates of the campus community, according to Jeff Brady, interim executive director for Campus Dining & Shops. “Our research showed the importance of branded products to our customers, and we are committed to providing exceptional goods and services to our campus community,” he said. “We are very excited to have both of these concepts on campus and feel our customers will be equally excited.”

Both Tim Hortons locations will be full-service eateries, featuring a full line of specialty soups and sandwiches, as well as the traditional beverages and baked goods. The sites will be operated by a local Tim Hortons franchisee and will accept cash, Campus Cash and Dining Dollars.

Jump Asian, which will be managed by CDS, will feature the most popular ethnic cuisine in the U.S. “We have been looking to add Asian cuisine to our profile for some time, and the Jump Asian menu—with fresh ingredients and zero trans-fat—should really be popular with our customers,” said Brady. Based on the success of the Student Union location, tentative plans call for a second Jump Asian location to open in the Ellicott Food Court, he added.

UB Law to dedicate Gross Classroom

In recognition of a $250,000 gift to the UB Law School, one of the school’s most-used lecture halls will become known as the Gordon and Gretchen Gross Classroom following dedication ceremonies on Tuesday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. will inaugurate the newly renamed classroom, 107 O’Brian Hall. A reception will follow.

Gordon Gross, who earned his degree from the UB Law School in 1955, is a senior partner in the Buffalo law firm Gross, Shuman, Brizdle & Gilfillan P.C. A U.S. Army veteran, he has been active in the Buffalo community and is a member of the SUNY Board of Trustees. Gretchen Gross, an early childhood educator, founded Audubon in College Park, a care center for young children, and has served as its director almost continually for 30 years.

The Grosses have made other significant gifts to UB, including $1 million to establish the Institute for Jewish Thought, Heritage and Culture, which will focus scholarship on the critical role that Judaism has played in the development and communication of Western thought, and a substantial gift to the Dr. Alan J. Gross Dental Student Fund.

“I got an excellent education at the Law School,” Gordon Gross said, “and I still have strong feelings for it. I have enormous gratitude that I was able to get a first-class legal education. The university is critically important to the future of Western New York, and I hope this gift will help the Law School continue to gain a great reputation among its peers.”

Law School Dean Makau W. Mutua noted that no law school can aspire to greatness without devoted alumni. “In this respect, Mr. Gross epitomizes the exemplar alumnus—someone who is key to the continued success of this Law School. Working closely with Gordon and Gretchen—shoulder to shoulder—we intend to carry UB Law to even greater heights,” Mutua said. “It is most appropriate that this signature classroom bear their names.”
