The National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review has appointed Robert M. Straubinger, professor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, to serve as a member of its Drug Discovery and Molecular Pharmacology (DMP) Study Section. Straubinger, who also directs that department's instrumentation facility, will serve through June 30, 2011. The DMP Study Section encompasses discovery, design, identification, isolation, development and synthesis of novel agents that are potentially useful in cancer therapy; identification of molecular targets of antineoplastic agents; and design, development and validation of novel preclinical models for anticancer drug evaluation.

Cheri Weber, associate program director, UBMicro IT Support Services, has been named a member of the council of the Campus Computer Resellers Alliance (CCRA). A special interest group of the National Association of College Stores, CCRA represents the special needs of resellers that sell technology products primarily to students, faculty, staff and, in some cases, the institution. CCRA holds an annual conference and trade show, and benefits members through education, information and business partnerships designed to increase technology reseller efficiencies.

The UB Launch chapter of Mortar Board received the Silver Torch Award for the 2006-07 academic year at the national honor society's recent conference. The UB chapter was one of 51 chapters to take home the Silver Torch Award, which recognizes a chapter's timeliness and dedication while exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.

Bruce J. Naughton, chief of the division of geriatric medicine, has been named to the regional advisory board for Univera Healthcare.

Nadine R. Roberts, a student in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, won fifth place in the 2007 National Daniel W. Meade Student Contest sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The annual contest provides an opportunity for young civil engineers to further their professional development and gain national attention. Todd Snyder, an instructor in the department, was named 2007 Region 1 faculty advisor of the year.

"Far Away Places: Lessons in Exile," a collection of travel essays written by Howard Wolf, professor in the Department of English, College of Arts and Sciences, will be published this fall in Jerusalem.
