Camp seeks middle school scholars
UB is looking for high-achieving middle school students to fill remaining slots in its two-week summer mathematics and science camp at the Buffalo Museum of Science.
Funded through a $100,000 grant from the New York State Education Department’s Excelsior Scholars Program, the summer camp already has attracted qualified eighth-grade students from the Buffalo Public Schools. Camp officials this week decided to allow non-Buffalo Public Schools students the opportunity to apply for positions still open.
The summer camp, which is free to those accepted, will be held weekdays from Aug. 4-15 at the Buffalo Museum of Science and will include intensive hands-on classes revolving around a “Mysteries of Science” theme. Students will tour local biomedical and scientific facilities, hone their career development skills and design a guided research project presented to a panel of scientists.
The program was developed by UB’s Center for Educational Collaboration with the Buffalo Public Schools as part of the UB-BPS Partnership.
Applications are being sought from students entering eighth grade who earned 4s (highest achievement level) in either math or ELA on New York state assessments for 2005-06 and 2006-07, and maintained a 90 or above GPA in math and science.
Interested students and their parents should contact Teresa Barrett at the UB Center for Educational Collaboration at 829-3099 or 829-6144 for an application and additional information. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis.
UB Art Gallery to feature 2 exhibits in July
An exhibition featuring graphic posters and an interactive, multimedia installation by NLXL, a design studio for visual communication and interaction design based in The Hague, will be on display beginning Tuesday through July 25 in the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.
A public reception will be held from 5:30pm to midnight on July 17 in the gallery. The three partners of NLXL—Bob van Dijk, Oscar Smeulders and Joost Roozekrans—will attend.
NLXL experiments with the possibilities of combining visual and interactive elements within single design solutions. Content, form and technique are considered carefully in each solution. The studio designs logos, corporate and visual identities, Web sites and Web identities, event styles, forms, posters, animations, books, content management systems, digital presentations and other digital applications. Its diverse clients range from cultural groups (Royal Academy of Art, The Hague), corporations (Nike Europe), and media outlets (MTV), among many others.
The NLXL exhibition was organized by Ben Van Dyke, assistant professor in the Department of Visual Studies, College of Arts and Sciences.
The UB Art Gallery also will reopen on Tuesday “Introversions,” an exhibition by architect and UB faculty member Shadi Nazarian that was on view in the Lightwell Gallery during the spring semester. The exhibition will remain on display through July 25 in the Lightwell Gallery.
In this project, Nazarian, clinical associate professor of architecture in the School of Architecture and Planning, frames and choreographs an architectural experience as audiences are drawn toward a responsive minimalist structure, seemingly hovering in midair. Working in the fertile intersections of art, architecture and emergent technology, she employs switchable liquid-crystal-layered privacy glass to explore cognition and think about the ways in which we navigate the environment we live in.
The UB Art Gallery’s summer hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery will be closed tomorrow, July 4.
