‘Idol’ hopefuls can schedule auditions

UB faculty and staff who have dreamed of showcasing their singing chops on “American Idol” now have a chance at the next best thing. UB Idol, UB’s first-ever singing contest, will debut during the Bulls Backyard Bash on Aug. 28. Auditions are being held at 11 a.m. Aug. 6 in 352 Slee Hall, North Campus and at 9 a.m. Aug. 13 in 107 Allen Hall, South Campus.

Each contestant will have 30 seconds to sing a song a cappella before a panel of three judges. The judges will rate each contestant on a scale of 1 to 10 and choose five finalists to compete in UB Idol, which will be held as part of the Backyard Bash festivities before the Bulls’ home opener football game against the University of Texas-El Paso.

The winner of UB Idol will receive a two-night stay in the Holiday Inn Ithaca, a $25 gift certificate to the hotel restaurant and a tour of Cayuga Lake wineries.

UB Idol is sponsored by University Human Resources.

Contact Amy Myszka at 645-5357 or at HR-Wellness@buffalo.edu to schedule an audition.

Workshop focuses on winning national awards

Higher education administrators and faculty from across the country who assist students in applying for an array of prestigious, nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships are gathering at UB today and tomorrow for a National Association of Fellowship Advisors (NAFA) Summer Workshop.

The workshop is focusing on “best practices” in coordinating fellowship and scholarship advisement services on campus, according to Hadar Borden, NAFA workshop coordinator and interim administrative director of the Undergraduate Academies at UB.

Fifty participants have registered for the workshop—many representing campuses that are leaders in the field. Presenters include representatives and readers from the Harry S. Truman Foundation, Rhodes Scholarship Trust, Fulbright Program, Morris K. Udall Scholarship and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

UB is hosting the workshop in recognition of the success of its students in competing for these national fellowships and scholarships. (Click here to read a Reporter story about UB’s success in keeping pace with the best and the brightest.)
