The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Kangaroos shot a blistering 60.4 percent and had five players score in double figures as they defeated the Bulls, 81-67, on Jan. 21 in Alumni Arena.

Senior swingman Rasaun Young led UB with 22 points, senior guard Mike Martinho added 17 points and freshman center Nikolai Alexeev had 10 points and six blocked shots in the loss.

On Jan. 24, Martinho drilled seven three-pointers en route to a game-high 26 points as UB snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Western Illinois, 74-59, in a Mid-Continent Conference battle in Alumni Arena.

Martinho led a three-point barrage by the Bulls as UB hit 11-of-22 long-distance shots and led from wire-to-wire. Alexeev had a career-high 14 points and five rebounds while junior forward Robert Harris had a career-high 12 rebounds.

Young saw a streak of 39 straight double-figure games snapped when he was held to five points in just 13 minutes of action due to foul trouble.

Basketball

The Bulls grabbed two conference victories this past week over UMKC and Western Illinois to move to 12-6 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-Continent Conference.

On Jan. 21, the Bulls shot 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point land to put the Bulls up 42-34 over UMKC at halftime. In the second half, the Bulls continued their hot shooting streak with 55.2 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from behind the arc.

Junior Megan McCray poured in a season-high 20, while senior Charissa Gardner added 16 points and six assists off the bench as the Bulls knocked off the Kangaroos, 83-68.

On Jan. 24, the Bulls shot 57.7 percent from field-goal range, as the Bulls knocked off Western Illinois, 79-64.

Freshman forward Tiffany Bell pitched in 16 points, while seniors Latoya Crumpton and Charissa Gardner added 10 points apiece.

Wrestling

DeAugustine, now 22-9 on the year, also won the title at the Wilkes Open and finished second at the Slippery Rock Open. As a team, UB finished third with 145.5 points behind first-place Hofstra (153) and Cornell (148).

All 10 of UB's wrestlers placed. Junior 118-pounder Brian Schaal, freshman 126-pounder Chad Caros and senior 150-pounder John Stutzman all finished second.

Other UB wrestlers who placed include, third: Jeromy McVige (142 pounds), John Eschenfelder (190 pounds) and Mike Garofalo (heavyweight); fourth: Josh States (177 pounds); seventh: Matt Ricci (167 pounds).

Swimming

The Bulls knocked off cross-town rival Canisius, 196-78, on Jan. 24 in UB Natatorium. Sophomore Inger Rooneem and freshman Carol Cottingham set new school records in the meet. Rooneem swam a 2:07.79 in the women's 200 IM and Cottingham swam a 2:21.53 in the women's 200 Breast.

Indoor Track and Field

The women finished third with 142 points behind Vermont (164) and Albany (144.50), while the men came in second with 158.50 points behind Albany (196).
