Women's

UB 65, Youngstown State 66

The women lost their fifth Mid-Con game of the season, and second to Youngstown State, on Feb. 14 in Alumni Arena.

The Penguins controlled the first half, leading by as many as 18 points, and dominating first-half scoring, shooting 43.3 percent from the field, compared to the Bulls' 24.1 percent.

The Bulls made a slow, but convincing, run in the second half, eventually tying the score at 65 on a layup by freshman Tiffany Bell and a pass from freshman Mari McClure.

Youngstown State had possession when, with six seconds left in regulation, junior forward Samantha Cerny committed a foul, sending YSU to the line and giving the Penguins the 66-65 victory.

Women's

The women competed in the University of Pittsburgh Invitational held Feb. 13-15. Senior Annulett Dillon made it to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket in the Flight A singles, where she lost to Duquesne's Krista Kondrath, 6-1, 6-1. Other highlights included junior April Kiser, who made it to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket in the Flight D singles before losing to Akron's Grace deGuia, while freshman Andrea Hughes captured the consolation bracket, defeating L. Davis and T. Paris of Pitt.

Indoor Track and Field

UB had seven top finishers and two school records were broken at the Cornell Invitational held Feb. 14. Men's team highlights included performances by senior Fumu Gakodi, who was first in the 400m and second in the 200m; sophomore Spencer Bell, third in the 400m, and senior Neil Murray, second in the pole vault.

Highlights of the women's team were performances by junior Shelly Hamilton, first in the high jump, and junior Ruth Conlon, first in the 20-pound weight throw.

Sophomore Matt Streng broke a UB school record in the Pentathlon, finishing seventh of 26 and scoring 3,054 points.

UB also broke a school record, placing second in the men's 4x800 with a time of 7:59.69.

Basketball

Men's

UB 72, Youngstown State 57

The men defeated the first-place Youngstown State Penguins, 72-57, Feb. 14 in Alumni Arena.

The Bulls led in the first half by as many as nine points before YSU cut Buffalo's lead to 23-20. However, after both teams traded baskets in the waning moments of the half, a layup by forward Robert Harris gave UB a 29-24 lead at intermission. Youngstown State shot 41.7 percent in the first half, while the Bulls connected on 11 of their 25 attempts.

In the second half, the Penguins quickly erased UB's five-point halftime lead. Both teams would trade baskets for the next seven minutes, with Youngstown State taking the lead on three different occasions during that span. With the score tied at 42-42 with 12:15 remaining, the Bulls went on a 16-5 run in the next four minutes to take a 58-47 lead. The Penguins cut UB's lead to nine at 58-49, but the Bulls responded with a 14-8 run to close out the game and earn the 72-57 win. UB senior Rasaun Young lead all scorers with 17 points, while senior swingman Matt Clemens was in double figures for the second straight game with 14 points.

Wrestling

UB 34, Boston University 9
UB 9, Rider 21

UB split a pair of conference meets on Feb. 15, defeating Boston University, 34-9, while losing to 20th-ranked Rider, 21-9. Senior 150-pounder John Stutzman became UB's winningest wrestler with his 92nd win at UB, passing former Division II All-American Bill Stanbro. Senior 142-pounder Jeromy McVige, freshmen 126-pounder Chad Caros and 158-pounder Vince DeAugustine each won both of their matches, while junior 118-pounder Brian Schaal defeated his opponent from Boston before losing a tough 12-8 decision to Rider's John Carvalheira, currently ranked fourth in the country.
