Men's

Canisius 80, UB 78

Hodari Mallory scored off an offensive rebound with less than 1 second remaining on the clock in overtime to give Canisius an 80-78 win over UB on Nov. 30, dropping the Bulls to 0-3.

The last-second shot capped off an exciting game for the 2,311 fans in Alumni Arena who saw UB hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to tie the game at 64-64 and send it into overtime.

Women's

UB 71, Albany 56
UB 81, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 52

UB kept its unblemished record intact with a pair of victories. UB, 5-0, opened the week with a 71-56 win over visiting Albany on Nov. 29.

The Bulls never trailed in the game, and led by as many as 24 points in the second half. UB struggled at times, both offensively and defensively, committing 18 turnovers and allowing the Great Danes to shoot an improved 41.5 percent from the floor and score 56 points.

UB's Tiffany Bell scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Four Bulls scored in double figures on Saturday as UB held Wisconsin-Milwaukee to just six field goals in the second half, defeating the Panthers, 81-52, for their fifth straight victory of the season. Mari McClure led all scorers with 18 points. Bulls outscored UWM, 44-22, in the final 20 minutes of play.

 
Athletes of the Week

Shawn Kegel finished third in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational wrestling tournament with a 6-1 record in the 133-pound bracket. After falling in the quarter-finals, Kegel bounced back with four straight wins to claim third place, defeating some of the tournament's top-ranked grapplers, including Pittsburgh's Rob Loper-the tournament's top seed and this season's second-ranked wrestler in the nation in preseason polls.

Christina Keck of the women's track-and-field team set a school record in the 1000 meters, finishing second by just a fraction of a second at the Katie Almeter Memorial Colgate Invita-tional. Keck's time of 2:55.94 broke the old record of 3:00.17 set by Judith Novak in 1995 and qualified her for the ECAC Championships. The Bulls won the meet, scoring 163 points to easily outdistance host Colgate and local rival Canisius.

Wrestling

UB ties for 21st place in Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

UB took part in its second invitational of the season last weekend as it traveled to the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The Bulls tied with Cal Poly, for 21st place among the 52 teams with 38 points. Illinois won the event with 156 points. Last season, the Bulls placed 27th with 20 points.

Senior Shawn Kegel was the Bulls' lone wrestler to place, finishing third with a 6-1 record in the 133-pound bracket. After going 2-0, Kegel lost his quarterfinal match to Oregon's Brian Watson, the eventual second-place finisher. He bounced back with four straight wins to claim third place, defeating some of the tournament's top-ranked grapplers along the way. In the fifth wrestleback, he defeated Pittsburgh's Rob Loper, the tournament's top seed and this season's No. 2-ranked wrestler in the nation in preseason polls.

Men's

UB places fourth in Nittany Lion Invitational

UB finished fourth of four squads at the Nittany Lion Invitational last weekend. Host and 20th-ranked Penn State won the three-day meet.

The Bulls picked up strong performances in the 400 individual medley, placing two swimmers in the "A" final. Jason McLachlan placed third in a lifetime best of 4:03.33, while teammate Eric Stimson was fourth in 4:09.99.

McLachlan also placed second in the 1650 freestyle in another lifetime best of 16:04.49.

Stimson finished second in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.37. He also was part of the 200 medley relay squad, along with Mike Szyprowski, Peter Zeitler and Tony Lizauckas, that placed sixth in 1:38.92.

Women's

UB places fifth in Patriot Invitational

UB took fifth place among 13 teams at the Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va. Washington State won the overall team competition.

UB freshman Jolie Pun placed fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.61.

Abby Delia finished fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:07.00 and seventh in the 100 backstroke in 59.43. She also took seventh in the 50 freestyle in 24.80 and eighth in the 100 butterfly in 59.36. The 800 freestyle-relay squad of Dawn Hickey, Heather Rochette, Katrina Sinclair and Jeni Broderick finished sixth in 7:57.46. Hickey and Sinclair placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 1650 freestyle with times of 17:42.18 and 17:45.15.

Indoor Track and Field

Men and women win at Katie Almeter Memorial Invitational

The men's and women's track-and-field squads opened their seasons on Saturday with convincing wins at Colgate's Katie Almeter Memorial Invitational.

The men scored 144 points to finish ahead of Colgate (100.5) and Canisius (68.5) in the tri-meet. The Bulls had a pair of double-winners in the field events, as Adam Smith took the shot put and 35-pound weight throw, while Kamau Halim won the long jump and triple jump. Dan Simpson (pole vault), Pete Otovic (400 meters), Rick Juszkiewicz (800 meters) and Mike Commisso (1000 meters) also were victorious for the Bulls.

The women's squad was impressive as well, scoring 163 points to easily outdistance Colgate (101) and Canisius (61). UB set four school records in the meet, including a pair by freshmen in their first collegiate competition. Freshman Laura Olson took the pole vault with a leap of 10-3 and Faith Thompson won the shot put with a toss of 41-2. Biaunca McFarland (38-2, triple jump) and Christina Keck (2:55.94, 1000 meters) also set school standards. Keck qualified for the ECAC Championships with her showing in the 1000 meters. Jenelle Callender and Bernadette Boswell registered double wins, while Christina Matthews, Sarah Fletcher and Katie Scott won individual events.
