The Bulls got off to a slow start and had a strong finish against Central Michigan on Saturday, but it was not enough to overcome the Chippewas as UB failed in its attempt at the first MAC win of the season, falling 86-77. UB fell to 2-10 overall on the season and 0-5 in the MAC.

The week started with a visit to Bowling Green on Jan. 10. The Falcons were looking to start a new home-court winning streak after having their 20-game streak snapped four days before by Central Michigan. UB didn't want to make it easy for BGSU, but couldn't hang on as the Falcons used hot shooting in the second half for a 90-75 MAC win.

The Bulls got some devastating news prior to the road trip when junior forward Jason Robinson was declared academically ineligible for the second semester, according to coach Reggie Witherspoon. Robinson did not accompany the team and will not be eligible for any further action this season. Robinson was UB's second-leading scorer through 10 games at 15.1 points per game, and his 6.1 rebounds per game led the Bulls. Robinson, a junior, can continue to practice with the team, and with satisfactory academic progress, will be eligible for competition next fall.

Athletes of the Week

Ryan Bentley of the wrestling team was 2-0 at 141 pounds at the Virginia Duals. Bentley defeated opponents from Pennsyl-vania—which was ranked as high as 18th in the Intermat poll—and West Virginia in the Bulls’ two matches. Bentley for the season is 10-1 in dual-meet competition and 21-3 overall, tied for the most overall wins this season.

Jessica Kochendorfer of the women’s basketball team set career highs with 16 points and 10 rebounds vs. Kent State and recorded her first double-double. She followed that with 15 points and five rebounds at Ohio. In the Bulls’ last four contests, all Mid-American Conference games, the freshman forward is averaging 11.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest.

The Bulls dropped their second-straight MAC game and fourth game of the season, 82-70, at Ohio University on Saturday. UB now is 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. The Bulls got a team-high 15 points from freshman Jessica Kochendorfer and a career-high 13 points from freshman Virginia Jennings. The Bobcats (4-11, 1-3 MAC) outscored the Bulls by a 26-3 margin at the foul line, and they shot 58 percent from the floor for the game.

Senior Sonia Ortega was ejected from the game with 35 seconds remaining after committing a flagrant, intentional deadball foul. She will sit out the team's next two contests.

The Bulls began their week with Kochendorfer recording her first career double-double with career highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds and Tiffany Bell adding a team-high 19 points, as the Bulls dropped their first game at home this season, 68-60, to visiting Kent State. The Golden Flashes (8-5 overall, 3-0 MAC) dominated the glass, outrebounding the Bulls by a 38-26 margin. Kent also shot 47 percent from the floor, including 44 percent from three-point range, to earn its fifth straight victory.

Wrestling

UB dropped to 7-4 overall on the season with a pair of losses at the Virginia Duals hosted by the University of Virginia on Friday.

The Bulls dropped a 26-9 decision in the day's first match to the University of Pennsylvania, ranked 23rd by the National Wrestling Coaches Association this week and as high as 16th by The Wrestling Mall.

The lone winners for UB were Ryan Bentley, Josh States and John Eschenfelder. Bentley shut out Max Galka at 141 pounds by a 7-0 score; States posted a 6-3 win over Marcus Schontube at 184 pounds, and Eschenfelder nipped Michael Faust, 2-1, at heavyweight.

In the second match of the day, the Bulls lost narrowly to West Virginia by a 19-16 score. Once again, Bentley, States and Eschenfelder posted impressive wins and were joined in the winner's circle by Charlie Voorhees at 125 pounds and Billy Jacoutot at 149 pounds.

Voorhees began the match with an impressive 13-3 win over Gregory White, while Bentley (7-1 win at 141 pounds) and Jacoutot (3-1 win at 149 pounds) helped the Bulls to an early lead as UB won three of the first four matches.

However, the Mountaineers got key wins at 157, 165 and 174 before States broke through with a 7-0 whitewash of Jon Foster. However, WVU clinched the match by winning at 197 pounds before Eschenfelder closed the match with a 4-1 win over Ryan Kehler.

Freshman diver Kristi Reynolds was victorious in both the one-meter (194.25) and three-meter (220.43) competitions. Her three-meter performance also marked her season-best scoring effort.
