UB snaps losing streak

UB put together a winning week-going 3-2 and snapping its 10-game losing skid-with an 11-7 win at Niagara to begin the week. The Bulls pounded out a season high 19 hits against the Purple Eagles.

However, the win streak was a brief one, as the Bulls dropped a 23-3 decision to visiting Ohio University Friday afternoon in the Mid-American Conference series opener at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia. The teams split Saturday's doubleheader at Dwyer Stadium, with the Bulls downing the Bobcats, 7-3, in the opener while the

Bobcats took the nightcap, 26-3.

But UB gained a split with Ohio in the four-game series, taking a 7-1 victory Sunday afternoon. It was the first time that UB had beaten a MAC opponent twice in a series this season. UB is now 9-29 overall and 4-16 in league play.

Athletes of the Week

Eric Huber of the baseball team went 9-for-17 (.529) with a home run and seven runs batted in as the Bulls went 3-2 on the week, defeating Niagara, 11-7, and splitting a four-game series with Ohio. Huber went 4-for-5 at Niagara, rapping a pair of doubles in the contest. He had a three-run homer in the Bulls' 7-3 win over Ohio. Huber leads the team with a .392 batting average and 56 hits this season and is second on the club with 31 RBIs. The Novice Four crew team of Sara Sheffer, Mary Conniff, Tracy Torelli, Tracy Clarke and coxswain Katie Johnson won their race at the SUNY Championships in Owego with a time of 6:41. This is the first SUNY Championship won by a Bulls' squad.

Softball

UB drops games to Colgate, Bowling Green

UB dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Colgate in non-conference action in the UB Softball Stadium to open the week. The Bulls lost an 8-1 decision in the opening game before giving up four runs in the 10th inning of game two to lose the nightcap, 7-3.

The Bulls had come back to tie the score at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh. The score remained knotted at 3-3 until the 10th inning, when the Red Raiders exploded with four runs on three hits to put the game out of reach. Freshman Jessica Labella hit a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Bulls some hope, but the Red Raiders held on for the victory.

In other action, Bowling Green scored four unanswered runs, two in the fifth and two in the seventh, to defeat UB, 4-1, in the opening game of a three-game series at the UB Softball Stadium. The Falcons outhit the Bulls by a 9-4 margin and recorded six hits in the final three innings to overcome the 1-0 lead that Buffalo had built in the third.

The Bulls dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Bowling Green on Saturday, 3-0 and 5-1, falling to 8-34 overall and 3-15 in the Mid-American Conference.

Outdoor Track

Teams compete in Vielbig Invitational

The men's and women's track and field teams competed Saturday in the Judith and Leslie Vielbig Invitational meet hosted by Syracuse University. There was no team scoring in the meet.

Kamau Halim posted a double victory, taking the men's long jump at 24-3 (7.39m) and triple jump at 49-11.75 (15.23m). Mike Commisso broke his own record for the second week in a row, taking the 800 meters in 1:51.64. Commisso ran a 1:51.83 at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., the previous week.

Joe Loiacano also set a new school mark with his second-place finish in the shot put. Loiacano broke Adam Smith's record with a toss of 52-2.50 (15.91m).

Other UB men's winners included Tim Giagios in the 400 hurdles (56.70), Keith Gentes in the hammer throw (179-5, 54.68m) and Bryan Lundy in the javelin (177-4, 54.06m). The UB men also took the 4x100 (42.35) and 4x400 (3:19.09) relays.

The UB women were led by strong performances from Biaunca McFarland and Faith Thompson. McFarland took the triple jump at 39-5.75 (12.03m),while Thompson won the shot put at 41-7.25 (12.68m).

Other women's winners included Bernadette Boswell in the 400 meters (59.19), Christina Keck in the 800 (2:13.73) and Laura Olson in the pole vault (10-4, 3.15m). Christina Matthews and Jennifer Roseti both recorded 5-3.75 (1.62m) heights in the high jump.

The men's tennis team lost a heartbreaking match, 4-3, to Toledo in its final home competition of the season.

Seniors Budi Susanto and Dave Emihovich played their final home matches of their UB careers. Susanto teamed with sophomore Fery Kasiman at first doubles but could not pull out the win, dropping an 8-6 match. Susanto also dropped a three-set, first-singles match.

Emihovich teamed with junior captain Justin Brtko at second doubles and also could not produce a win, falling 8-3. But Emihovich, playing fourth singles, notched his first-ever MAC victory against Shi Jin, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Bulls concluded their regular season with a 7-0 loss at Western

Michigan and a 5-2 loss at Northern Illinois over the weekend.

Women's

Eastern Michigan 7, UB 0
Toledo 7, UB 0

UB was swept in its final two series of the regular season, falling to Eastern Michigan, 7-0, and Toledo, 7-0. Both matches were played at the UB Tennis Center.

UB finishes the regular season at 3-15 overall and 1-8 in league play.
