Bartlett uses the symbolic power we associate with the sea, its sublimity, as a foundation on which to develop a series of paintings which reference other paintings, theater, literature and sacred myths, as well as his own personal dreams and experiences. Bartlett has traded the grand theme of history as a common, shared experience for psychical reality: the subject of psychoanalysis in which real and imagined, present and past, all have equal weight.
