Shelley Niro
Brochure available with essay by Sherry Corcoran.
Shelley Niro: Outside the Columns features the film and photographic work of internationally renowned artist Shelley Niro, Mohawk from the Six Nations. Work selected for this exhibition facilitates a dialogue concerning North American native issues, including sovereignty, representation, and cultural tenacity beyond the grand narrative of the colonizer and the colonized. The exhibition premiered Niro’s latest short film, Hunger, 2007.
Shelley Niro (b. 1954, Niagara Falls) is a Mohawk from the Six Nations Reserve. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario, London, and a Bachelors degree in fine art, painting, and sculpture from the Ontario College of Art. Niro has received wide acclaim for her film and photography work, which uses satirical humor to address pertinent issues faced by contemporary Native North American society.
Guest curated by Sherry Corcoran as part of her art history thesis for the Department of Visual Studies.
