The Alan E. Cober Memorial Lecture Series Schedule is sponsored by the UB Art Galleries, UB Department of Art History, UB Department of Art and Brainstorm-Communicators Club. All events are free of charge and open to the public.

"Drawing From Life," a lecture by Sue Coe

Feb. 15, 6:30 p.m.

Screening Room, Center for the Arts, North Campus

Coe is considered one of the most important political artists working today. She has been featured on the cover of Art News. Her work is in the permanent collections of many notable museums and has been the subject of many exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Hirschhorn Museum in Washington. A firm believer in the power of the media to effect change, she uses printmaking as a way to reach a broad audience. Her work has been published as social commentary in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and countless other periodicals. Her publications include "How to Commit Suicide in South Africa," "Police State," "Dead Meat" and the recently published "Pit's Letter."

Lecture by illustrator Barbara Nessim

An artist, illustrator and educator for more than 25 years, Nessim's work has been featured in many major publications, including Rolling Stone, Time and Newsweek, and her paintings and drawings shown in many galleries and museum exhibitions. Since 1980, she has focused on computer art and has lectured widely on the subject. Nessim is chair of the Department of Illustration at Parsons School of Design. Her work is exhibited on two Web sites: and .

Lecture by Judy Garlan, art director, Atlantic Monthly

April 25, 6 p.m.

Screening Room, Center for the Arts, North Campus

Garlan worked with Alan Cober on many assignments in her 17 years as art director of the Atlantic Monthly. During her tenure, the magazine won some 400 illustration and design awards, and published work by many of the finest illustrators and photographers in the world.
