Chicago Tribune, Jan. 17, article reports on RoweCom, a company to whom UB paid $1.3 million in pre-payments for 2003 library subscriptions. RoweCom did not pass the funds on, as required, to pay the publishers. It has re-paid to UB $500,000, but is now in bankruptcy and is unlikely to repay the rest of the money.

Clarion-Ledger (Mississippi), Jan. 19, article reports that Kmart Corporation is working on a new business plan to exit Chapter 11. The corporation will have to change the way it does business and who it competes with if it is to survive. Arun Jain is quoted.

Contra Costa Times, Jan. 2, article reports that people are neurologically wired to look for romance. This corresponds to a 1996 UB study where psychologists studied dating couples to determine how much they idealized their partner.

Daily Bruin, Jan. 15, article reports that the University of California is evaluating its position in light of new state budget costs. UC measures its competitiveness against the "comparison eight" comprising: Yale, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, UB, University of Virginia, University of Michigan and University of Illinois.

Dallas News, Jan. 20, article reports on a UB study that concludes that binge drinking entirely diminishes the protective effect of alcohol. Christopher Sempos said that having seven drinks in one day leads to different health results than having one drink a day for seven days. African-Americans have higher rates of both abstinence and binge drinking.

Ithaca Journal, Jan. 31, article reports on the protests related to George Pataki's proposed cuts to the higher education budget and tuition increases. Students and the United University Professions union have begun a billboard ad and media blitz.

Los Angeles Times, Jan. 15, article reports on poets who contributed to a USAID book about America for foreign distribution, but refused to promote it because they disagree with the U.S. administration's foreign policy. The article includes comments by Robert Creeley.

Los Angeles Times, Jan. 14, article reports on a State Department pamphlet written by prominent Americans after Sept. 11. It has become controversial because it cannot be published in the U.S. under the Smith-Mundt act, which prohibits the distribution of "propaganda" in the U.S. Participating authors such as Robert Creeley say they did not know what the pamphlet would be used for and do want their participation to be misconstrued as pro-war propaganda.
