Fundamental Changes Addressing Structural Racism in Medicine

Medical education at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is undergoing fundamental changes addressing structural racism in medicine in an effort initially inspired by students. The curriculum will provide racial and socioeconomic context behind the longstanding effects of systemic racism on the health of people of color in training the next generation of physicians.
Black History Education Established at UB

The University at Buffalo has announced the establishment of the Center for K-12 Black History and Racial Literacy Education. The center, founded and directed by Black history education scholar LaGarrett King PhD, Associate Professor of Learning and Instruction.
Local Law Established for the Office of Health Equity

This new office, headed by Director Kelly Wofford, Steering Committee Member of the Community Health Equity Research Institute, will help ensure all minority and disadvantaged residents have equal access to preventive health care and will seek ways to promote health and prevent diseases and conditions that are prevalent among minority, marginalized, and disadvantaged populations including in rural areas.
How Public Policy Decisions are Used Both to Destroy Black Neighborhoods and Communities

Henry-Louis Taylor, Jr., professor of urban and regional planning, told WBFO-FM that any discussion about the future of Buffalo’s Kensington Expressway must include equity. Those neighborhoods now suffer from higher rates of respiratory problems than other parts of the city, Taylor said, because of automobile pollution from the expressway.
UB Study Addresses Mental Health Pandemic Disparities

The UB School of Nursing is providing mental health support to city residents who are struggling during the pandemic.
The Mellowing Mind Study is seeking adults from low-income, African American neighborhoods to engage in mindfulness-related activities from their own home.

UB reported to more powerfully address and reverse Buffalo’s entrenched health disparities, the UB Center for Urban Studies, which is dedicated to regenerating underdeveloped neighborhoods, is joining the Community Health Equity Research Institute.
First Annual Institute Research Day

The First Annual Research Day of the Community Health Equity Research Institute last week was a huge success. The event generated great interest throughout the UB campus and the community. We received 51 abstracts from university and community teams and over 80 people attended and heard presentations by faculty, community members and students on innovative research and projects that focused on health equity and on the social determinants of health.
