Behavioral Neuroscience and Pharmacology; examining the behavioral and neurophysiological mechanisms of nicotine-induced increases in drug-taking behaviors of opioids and alcohol in rats
Examining the effects of adolescent nicotine exposure on context specific punishment of drug-seeking in adulthood. Employing Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs) to assess the specific involvement of neural projections from the insular cortex to the central amygdala on the degree of observed punishment-induced abstinence and cue-induced relapse. Additionally, the use of DREADDs to perturb neural projections involved with alcohol self-administration.
