Translational Teamwork Workshops: Watch and Learn series provides participants with basic knowledge of teamwork principles applicable in any research, educational, or clinical context.

For each workshop, participants can complete a brief self-assessment quiz to test their knowledge. These questions are located at the bottom of the evaluation survey accompanying each workshop recording. Any participant who successfully completes four or more quizzes is eligible for the Translational Teamwork Core Competency Series Certificate of Completion. Presenter:

Team Science 101 Ekaterina Noyes, PhD, MPH
Most research projects require a team of collaborators to work together in order to reach a common goal and advance science. However, research training and the academic tenure and promotion system focus primarily on individual productivity. In this introductory workshop, we define research teams, the stages of team formation, characteristics of successful teams, and discuss when teamwork may or may not be beneficial in research. We will work through case studies illustrating common challenges that arise in teams and identify strategies for problem solving and prevention. We will introduce tools that measure a person’s attitude toward teamwork as well as tools that measure team functioning.
Leading a Successful Research Team
Gabriela Popescu, PhD
No research program can be stronger than its weakest component. In this workshop, we will reflect on the triple responsibility of any Principal Investigator: to our research, to our trainees, and to our team, such that these three basic elements are strong and aligned. We will consider how successful teams are essential to a robust research program, how to go about developing, maintaining, and adapting your team in an ever-changing environment. We will discuss the importance of mission-based job descriptions and performance evaluations, how your team fits in the larger organizational culture and climate, and how to encourage and support creativity by supporting connections and wellbeing within your team.
Are Leadership and Teamwork Mutually Exclusive? Ekaterina Noyes, PhD, MPH
A good leader exhibits exemplary teamwork. Throughout the course of this workshop, we will discuss why leaders must model good behavior and create a culture of teamwork. We will also consider the differences between leadership and management, the various types of leaders and leadership styles, and how to train someone to improve their leadership skills. Utilizing smaller breakout teams, we will examine a scenario and identify the qualities of a good leader and finally come together to debrief on the leadership styles and strategies that characterize a good leader.
Leadership and Multidisciplinary Research Teams Prasad Balkundi, PhD, MBA
A majority of teams in organizations fail. This workshop focuses on two of the most important factors that determine team performance: information sharing and leadership. Drawing on the literatures on teams and leadership, we experience and understand why teams fail and what actions a leader can take to enhance team effectiveness. The workshop will involve team activities and lecture.
