Update from the Chair

Published August 8, 2022

Dear university community:

Since its formation in the summer of 2020, the University Police Advisory Committee, comprised of UB faculty, students and staff, as well as community leaders, has held numerous meetings and engaged in information gathering methods and activities with the purpose of working collectively with UB leadership, the campus community and University Police to identify issues that involve the safety and well-being of our entire UB community with the goal of fostering a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors.

These activities include conducting a campus climate survey with the university community and hosting a virtual town hall meeting in April, 2021. During the 2021-2022 academic year, the group has met several times to analyze the data accumulated from these activities to plan its next steps. This includes exploring the possibility of creating focus groups to further determine specific areas of concern or issues related to different subsets of communities across UB. These subsets will include faculty, students, staff, women, university police, and members of the LGBTQ, BIPOC, and downtown campus communities.  The committee has carefully honed its methodology and objectives for these activities with the goal of implementation for the fall, 2022 semester. Further communications and details about this next phase of inquiry for the University Police Advisory Committee will be shared with the UB community soon.

Additional information about the University Police Advisory Committee, its members and activities can be found on the group’s website here.

Sincerely,

Luis Chiesa
University Police Advisory Committee Chair
