Media Advisory: Children to receive school supplies Saturday in honor of the late Dr. Jonathan Daniels

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Children in Buffalo’s underserved neighborhoods will once again receive free school supplies in memory of a beloved faculty member of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

Several hundred backpacks filled with supplies will be distributed on Saturday, courtesy of the third annual Jonathan D. Daniels, MD Memorial School Drive: The Next Generation of Transformational Leaders. Many supplies, including crayons, pens, pencils, paper, scissors and calculators, were donated throughout the month of June.

What: Approximately 300 supply-filled backpacks will be given to students in grades K-8.

Where: The parking lot of Care Medical Practice, 1315 Jefferson Ave., Buffalo.

When: 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.

Note: Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Background: Daniels, associate director of admissions at the Jacobs School and a 1998 Jacobs School graduate, died July 4, 2022, along with two of his adult daughters, Jordan and Jensen, in a fire at their North Buffalo home.

Before his death, he had been working with Jacobs School natural sciences interdisciplinary graduate Beatriz González and his team in admissions on organizing a school supplies drive. The Office of Admissions continues to organize this drive to carry out his mission.

The drive’s goal is to provide tools for success to children in Buffalo’s underserved neighborhoods, including the same East Side neighborhood where Daniels’ pediatric practice was based.
