  • Nesper joins Goodwill board

    Kathleen Nesper, adjunct assistant professor of accounting and law, School of Management, has been named to the 2013-14 board of trustees of Goodwill Industries of Western New York.

    Nesper will serve a three-year term.

    The board provides leadership, guidance, support and assistance to Goodwill in its mission to provide job training and employment programs and services to people with disabilities and other vocational barriers.

  • Hess participates in transit conference

    Daniel Hess, associate professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, School of Architecture and Planning, was one of several local transportation experts who took part in a panel discussion at the recent “Case for Transit” conference held at Canisius College.

    The conference examined using light rail public transportation as a vehicle for sustainable economic growth and explored specific opportunities in the Buffalo-Niagara region as compared to other cities.

  • Nightingale co-winner of book award

    “Segregation: A Global History of Divided Cities” (University of Chicago Press, 2012), authored by Carl H. Nightingale, professor in the Department of Transnational Studies, was co-winner of the 2013 Jerry Bentley Prize in World History.

    Nightingale shares the honor with John Thornton, professor of history and African-American studies, Boston University, for his book “A Cultural History of the Atlantic World 1250-1820 (Cambridge University Press, 2012).

    The Bentley prize was awarded jointly by the World History Association and the American History Association in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of world history.

  • School of Social Work magazine wins national design award

    Mosaics, which is the magazine of the UB School of Social Work, has won a 2013 award of Excellence from University College Designers Association (UCDA).

    The UCDA Design Competition recognizes the best of the exceptional design work done to promote educational institutions (secondary, vocational or higher education).

    Those who contributed to the award-winning issue are: (from the School of Social Work) Barbara Rittner, associate professor and associate dean for advancement; Sarah J. Watson, senior project manager and Sarah Goldthrite, student; (from University Communications) Rebecca Farnham, art director; Nick Peterson, designer and Amber Winters, director of operations and planning.

    Mosaics is published twice a year as part of the Office of the Vice President for University Life and Services.
