Voting Faculty to meet September 23

The Voting Faculty of the University at Buffalo will hold its annual meeting at 2 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Center for Tomorrow.

Among the speakers will be President William R. Greiner, who will give the annual report of the president; Peter A. Nickerson, vice chair of the Voting Faculty and chair of the Faculty Senate, who will speak on plans for senate activities during the 1997-98 academic year, and Claude E. Welch Jr., past chair of the Faculty Senate, who will report on senate activitities during the 1996-97 academic year. A reception will follow.

San Diego State honors D. Bruce Johnstone

D. Bruce Johnstone, UB's University Professor of Higher Education and former chancellor of the State University of New York, has received an honorary degree from San Diego State University in California.

He received the degree, a Doctor of Humane Letters, Honorum Causa, on Aug. 28 in a ceremony where former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres received a Doctor of Laws, Honorum Causa. They are among only seven so honored in the 100-year history of the school. A previous recipient was President John F. Kennedy.

The degrees were bestowed at a convocation celebrating the beginning of the university's second century of operation and the official installation of Stephen J. Weber as its seventh president.

Johnstone served as president of Buffalo State College from 1979-88 and was the chancellor of the SUNY system from 1988-94, during which Weber was president of the SUNY College at Oswego. Johnstone has since joined the faculty of UB.

Enis named fellow of statistical association

Peter Enis, professor in the Department of Statistics, was named a fellow of the American Statistical Association at its recent annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif. The association, with 19,000 members, is one of the oldest scientific societies in the United States.

Enis was recognized for his contributions to research on exponential families and their variance functions, variance stabilizing transformations and group testing; for inspirational teaching and for excellence in administration and service to the profession. He has served as chair, interim chair and associate chair of the Department of Statistics.

"Teaching All Students" will be focus of Acer Colloquium

Gloria Ladson-Billings, author of the book "The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children," will speak at UB on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the annual Charlotte C. Acer Colloquium on Urban Education.

Her lecture, "Can I Ask You a Hard Question? Meeting the Challenge of Teaching All Students," will take place at 4 p.m. in the Center for Tomorrow on the North Campus. It will be followed by a reception.

The colloquium, sponsored by the UB Graduate School of Education, is funded by an endowment from alumnus Charlotte C. Acer.

An associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Ladson-Billings began her research on successful teachers of African-American students as a National Academy of Education Spencer Post-doctoral Fellow.

"Grate" American Sleep-Out is Sept. 19

The Office of Student Life and the Newman Center will sponsor the first annual Grate American Sleep-out on Friday, Sept. 19, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the area behind Allen Hall on the South Campus.

The sleep-out is an opportunity for students to spend a night outdoors to think and learn about homelessness.

Participants will seek pledges for each hour spent outside during the night, with donations to benefit homeless centers. For more information or to obtain a pledge card, call 833-6649.

Greiner to Speak on WBFO Sept. 17

President William R. Greiner will speak to the campus community Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 7-8 p.m. on WBFO 88.7 FM, UB's National Public Radio affiliate. Management grads score high on national CPA tests

Graduates of the undergraduate accounting program had the fourth-highest passing rate in the United States on all subjects of the May 1996 certified public accountant exam, according to a report released this month by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

The UB grads, all first-time candidates for CPA status, were among 57,521 candidates from more than 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide who sat for the exam. UB also distinguished itself at the MBA level, according to the report. Over the past 10 years, UB MBA graduates earned the fifth-highest passing rate on all subjects of the exam.

ELI offers English for non-native speakers

The English Language Institute (ELI) of the Graduate School of Education will offer English classes for non-native speakers beginning Sept. 22. The courses are designed for international professionals, scholars, researchers, students, residents and visitors who want to improve English skills.

Course offerings include Advanced Communications for the International Professional, Living and Working in English, Advanced Writing and Grammar, Accent Reduction and TOEFL Preparation. All classes are held in the evening. For more information call 645-2077.

UB Art Gallery announces exhibitions

The UB Art Gallery will present an exhibition of moving sculptures by American artist Lisa Hein that will run concurrently with a site-specific installation by Dutch artist Lara Schnitger.

The exhibit by Hein will open with a public reception from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 25, and will continue through Nov. 7 in the gallery's second-floor exhibition room in the Center for the Arts. Hein will meet with UB art students and will lecture at 4 p.m. on Sept. 25 in the CFA Screening Room.

Hein's works, which often incorporate motor-driven fans and pumps, have been interpreted as models for chaos theory, as well as models of emotional equilibrium.

The Schnitger exhibition, opening with a public reception from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 2 in the gallery's first-floor exhibition space, will run through Nov. 7. Schnitger will meet with art students while at UB, and will lecture at 4 p.m. on Oct. 2 in the CFA Screening Room.

Art Department plans four fall shows

The Department of Art will present four exhibitions this fall.

- "UB Painters," featuring the work of 25 students in the Painting Program, opened Sept. 10. It will run through Sept. 26.

- "Susan Babson, Photographs" will open on Oct. 1, featuring the work of Babson, winner of UB's "Crossing Borders" competition. The show will continue through Oct. 17.

- "XPOSE," featuring self-definitions in various mediums by UB art students, will open with a public reception for the artists from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 23, continuing through Nov. 14.

- "Dinnick & Howells: Pictures, Words, Meaning, Effect" will open with a public reception from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20. It will run through Friday, Dec. 12.
