UB got 22 points from senior Rasaun Young, and senior Mike Martinho had 18 as the fifth-seeded Bulls advanced to the semifinals of the 1998 Mid-Continent Conference Tournament with an 81-74 upset win over fourth-seeded Western Illinois on Sunday.

Seniors Scott McMillin and Matt Clemens scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Bulls, who advanced to face long-time nemesis Valparaiso in the semifinals on Monday.

Despite all four UB seniors scoring in double figures, it wasn't enough. The Valparaiso Crusaders eliminated the Bulls from the 1998 Mid-Con Tournament with a convincing 84-73 victory. Young led UB with 23 points, while Martinho had 19. McMillin and Clemens scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for UB.

Women's
UB 63, Oral Roberts 52
UB 75, Valparaiso 76

The UB women saw three players score in double figures as they defeated Oral Roberts in the quarterfinals of the 1998 Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Feb. 28 in Moline, Ill. Senior Charissa Gardner scored 16 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, while senior LaToya Crumpton had 15 points and rebounds to lead UB. Freshman Tiffany Bell added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Bulls, who advanced to face Valparaiso on Monday in the tournament semifinals.

A see-saw battle for most of the way, the Bulls took a 75-74 lead with 26 seconds remaining on a Samantha Cerny three-pointer from the corner. Although Cerny rebounded a Crusaders' missed shot on the ensuing possession with two seconds to play, a jump ball was called with possession favoring Valparaiso. Following a timeout by Valparaiso, the Crusaders scored a basket for the winning points. Gardner and junior Catherine Jacob led the Bulls with 23 points each.

Swimming

The Bulls scraped their way to another top-five finish at the 1998 ECAC Swimming and Diving Championships this past weekend. The Bulls have finished in the top-five teams in five out of the seven seasons they have been a Division I institution. The Bulls added four more lifetime best-performances to bring their season total to 98 best times for 17 swimmers during the 1997-98 season.

The Bulls were led the by individual performances of sophomore Dan Hickey, who finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:39.31. Hickey also finished third in the 100 freestyle in 45.76. The Bulls' 800 freestyle finished first in a time of 6:47.78. Of the 15 UB swimmers and one diver that competed, 13 scored in the meet.
