Football

UB 16, Lafayette 14
Scott Keller kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter to secure the Bulls' 16-14 come-from-behind victory on the road.

The win moved the Bulls to 2-1 on the season and snapped a six-game road losing streak. Keller kicked a career-high three field goals (from 23, 34 and 29 yards), helping the Bulls overcome a 14-7 deficit.

The Bulls did not allow a point in the second half to the host Leopards (0-2), the first time they have shut a team out in the second half since a 14-10 win at Hofstra on Nov. 2, 1996.

The game-winning drive was set up when senior defensive end Dan Poulsen forced an incompletion on third-and-three from the Lafayette 10-yard line. The Leopards were pinned deep after a 34-yard punt by Mike Masucci was downed at the three.

Drew Haddad returned the Lafayette punt 20 yards to the Leopards' 29-yard line. Six plays later, Keller made the 29-yard gamewinner. Keller has made all four of his field-goal attempts this season and 14 straights points after touchdown.

The Bulls defense was led by senior linebacker Antonio Perry with 13 tackles and a sack. Strong safety Eric Pipkins added 12 tackles, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery, while junior linebacker Dan Curcione had 10 tackles. The Bulls recovered three fumbles in the game and only gave the ball up once. Senior running back David Hinson had a game-high 52 yards on 11 carries and the game's first touchdown from five yards out. Fullback Josh Roth added 46 yards on 11 carries.

Volleyball

UB 2, Youngstown 3 UB 3, Columbia 0
UB 3, St. Francis 0 UB 3, Niagara 0
UB 2, Canisius 3
The women's volleyball team moved to 8-5 on the season after losing to Youngstown State (15-12, 15-10, 14-16, 12-15, 11-15) on Sept. 18, defeating St. Francis (Pa.) (15-3, 16-14, 15-7) and Columbia University (15-8, 15-7, 15-13) on Sept. 19 in two non-conference games in Alumni Arena, and defeating Niagara (15-7,15-8,15-11) and losing to Canisius (13-15, 15-5, 12-15, 15-7, 9-15) on Sept. 20 at Niagara.

On Saturday, freshman middle hitter Heather Barfuss led the Bulls in the two matches, averaging 11 kills, while junior setter Somer Deschambault averaged 25 assists for the day.

In the Bulls' win over Niagara, Deschambault had 36 assists and freshman outside hitter Keri Shiels had 13 kills.

Soccer

Women's
UB 3, Marshall 1 UB 0, Ohio U. 1
The Bulls women's soccer team was victorious in its first Mid-American Conference contest as it downed visiting Marshall, 3-1, on Sept. 18, but incurred its first loss of the season to undefeated MAC powerhouse, Ohio University,

1-0, on Sept. 20.

Senior co-captain Tracey Britton netted two second-half goals to secure the win for Coach Jean Tassy's squad against Marshall.

Sophomore Heather Collins became the first UB athlete to be honored by the MAC when she was named the conference's women's soccer player-of-the-week on Sept. 15.

Men's
UB 4, Canisius 3 UB 2, Adelphi 0
UB 0, Siena 2
During a week of games on the road, the Bulls men's soccer team moved to 7-2 on the season as it defeated Canisius, 4-3, on Sept. 16, shut out Adelphi, 2-0, on Sept. 19, and finally lost to Siena, 2-0, on Sept. 20.

Against Canisius, junior forward Steve Butcher dominated the Golden Griffins and led his squad to victory with three goals, including the game-winner, and one assist. Butcher also netted an unassisted goal in the shutout against Adelphi. Sophomore forward Tim Songer had a goal and an assist in the Canisius game and also found the back of the net in the Adelphi outing.

Senior goalie and co-captain Jim Schoenburg recorded his third shutout in the 1998 campaign against Adelphi.

Cross Country

Women's
UB 35, Cornell 47, Colgate 62, Syracuse 88
The women's cross country team received top honors at the UB Triangular Meet, scoring 35 points. (Cornell 47, Colgate 62, Syracuse 88). Coach Dick Barry's unit was paced by junior Jennifer Folckemer, who placed third with a time of 18:52.80. Junior Marie Macander followed closely and finished fourth at 19:02.70.

Men's
UB 30, Cornell 50, Syracuse 60, Colgate 86
The men's squad also won its meet with 30 points, followed by Cornell (50), Syracuse (60) and Colgate (86). The Bulls claimed the top two finisher spots in the race as sophomore Tony David (26:04.90) edged out teammate junior Patrick Nolan (26:07.50) for the victory in the men's 8,000 meter run.

Tennis

Men's
UB 7, Niagara 0
The men's tennis squad defeated host Niagara, 7-0, on Sept. 17. Budi Susanto, Onke Murdono, Earl McGrath and Justin Bitko each had victories in both their singles and doubles matches.

Athletes of the Week

Junior forward Steve Butcher led the men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over host Canisius with three goals, including the game-winner, and one assist. He also found the back of the net as Coach Tassy's squad shut out host Adelphi, 2-0. Butcher now has a team-high 10 goals in nine games.

During this week's volleyball matches, freshman middle hitter Heather Barfuss led Coach Bob Maxwell's team's offense by totaling 63 kills and 10 assists in 19 games. Barfuss helped the Bulls to an overall record of 3-2 for the week.
