Have a Virtual Holiday!

Winter Solstice? Kwanzaa? Hanukkah? Christmas? Need a gift for someone special? Of course there's online shopping, but there's something even better! For the person who has everything, consider donating money in that person's name to a worthy organization. Go to Yahoo http://www.yahoo.com, click on "Society and Culture" and then choose "Issues and Causes" http://dir.yahoo.com/Society_and_Culture/Issues_and_Causes. Choose an issue, then click on "Organizations" and make a selection. Note the snail-mail address of the organization and send off a check. Print out a few pages from the Web site of the organization, roll them up, tie a ribbon around them, and present them as a gift to that special person with a card indicating you've made a contribution in their name. Among the issues listed that contain links to organizations are: animal rights, child advocacy, civil rights, conservation, disabilities, feminism, human rights, men's movement, multiculturalism, peace and non-violence, poverty and sustainable development.

From the "Society and Culture" screen, you also can choose "Holidays and Observances" http://dir.yahoo.com/Society_ and_Culture/Holidays_and_Observances/. Pick a holiday and enjoy the sites: traditions, celebration ideas, history and, of course, recipes! Learn about winter solstice celebrations in other cultures and ancient times at Ancient Origins of the Holidays http://www.candlegrove.com. Wondering about the history of Kwanzaa, its principles and symbols, and a suggested schedule for its celebration? Take a look at the Kwanzaa Information Center http://www.melanet.com/kwanzaa/. Want to make Grandmother's southern fried okra, African green pepper and spinach, sweet-potato pie, African vegetable stew, benne cakes or black-eyed peas with ham? Look at Kwanzaa Recipes http://members.tripod.com/~Nancy_J/kwanzaa.htm. Want to know the meaning of Hanukkah, its laws and customs, a story of Hanukkah for kids and traditional Hanukkah recipes like potato latkes, sufganiyot, applesauce cookies, and others? Check out Virtual Jerusalem: Chanukah Megasite http://www.vjholidays.com. Would someone you know like to help make a gingerbread house? Walk down Gingerbread Lane http://members.aol.com/batgal2/ginger.html.

The Holiday and Observances" page on Yahoo has other useful categories to choose from. Click on "Virtual Greeting Cards" http://dir.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Virtual_Cards/Holidays_and_Observances and personalize an electronic card to send for the holiday of your choice. When all is done, click on "Holiday Stress Management" http://dir.yahoo.com/Health/Mental_Health/Stress_Management/Holiday_Stress/, choose a site, and try to relax. Happy Holidays!
