Men's

St. Bonaventure 61, UB 53 Ball State 64, UB 58

Central Michigan 79, UB 70

The UB men's basketball team dropped three home games this week, one against Western New York rival St. Bonaventure, 61-53, on Jan. 19, and two against Mid-American Conference opponents: Ball State, 64-58, on Jan. 21, and Central Michigan, 79-70, on Saturday.

the Week
Eric Stimson led the men's swimming team to victories against St. Bonaventure, 136-101, and MAC opponent Bowling Green, 161-75, with first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke and 400-medley relay in both meets.

Inger Rooneem had wins in the 50 freestyle (24.45), the 100 freestyle (53.08) and 200 individual medley (2:10.45) in the women's swimming team's 152-148 defeat of MAC opponent Bowling Green.

In the loss to the Bonnies before 2,457 fans in Alumni Arena, Louis Campbell led the Bulls with 12 points, while Maliso Libomi added 11 points and six rebounds. Alex Vasiliev contributed six points, five assists and four steals.

The Bulls only trailed by three points at halftime, 33-30, during the game against Ball State, but were unable to get a win behind Louis Campbell's 21-point performance that included shooting 9-of-11 from the field and 2-2 from three-point range. Will Campbell added 15 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

On Saturday, Coach Tim Cohane's squad was led by the torrid shooting of freshman Koran Godwin. Godwin scored 12 points in five minutes of first-half action to pull Buffalo to within 35-32 at intermission. He finished the night with a career-high 26 points. Louis Campbell added 12 points and eight rebounds for Buffalo, while Nate Johnson had seven rebounds off the bench.

Women's

UB 59, Central Michigan 56 Northern Illinois 77, UB 68

The Bull's women's basketball team maintained its perfect home-court record (8-0) as it defeated MAC opponent Central Michigan, 59-56, in Alumni Arena on Jan. 21. UB lost on the road in a double overtime thriller to Northern Illinois, 77-68, on Saturday.

In the victory against Central Michigan, senior point guard Catherine Jacob became the ninth player in UB women's basketball history to score 1,000 points in her career at the 19:00 mark in the second half.

Three players scored in double figures, including two with double doubles. Jacob led the team with 16 points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore center Tiffany Bell recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Samantha Cerny was also in double figures for the Bulls with 12 points. Sophomore guard Sonia Ortega paced the Buffalo defense with six steals.

In Saturday's MAC action against NIU, Kim Coon paced Coach Cheryl Dozier's team through two overtimes with 22 points, while Mari McClure added 16 points. Bell scored 12.



Swimming

Men's

UB 136, St. Bonaventure 101 UB 161, Bowling Green 75

The UB men's swimming team maintained its perfect record and moved to 1-0 in the MAC (5-0 overall) last week after defeating Western New York rival St. Bonaventure, 136-101, on Jan. 21 and winning its first conference meet of the season against Bowling Green, 161-75, both in Alumni Natatorium.

In the meet against the Bonnies, the Bulls were led by Eric Stimson (200 individual medley-1:57.45; 200 backstroke-1:52.33; 400 medley relay-3:27.71), Dan Hickey (200 freestyle-1:42.42; 100 freestyle-46.7; 200 freestyle relay-3:13.16) and John Nilles (50 freestyle-21.19; 400 medley and freestyle relays), who had three first-place finishes apiece.

Dave Sofer captured both the one-and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 226.65 points and 247.57 points, respectively. Other first-place finishes came from Jason McLachlan in the 500 freestyle (4:45.07) and Kevin Kelly in the 1000 freestyle (9:52.65).

In the meet against Bowling Green, the Bulls were led again by Stimson with times of 1:57.82 in the 200 individual medley, 1:55.90 in the 200 backstroke and 3:28.66 in the 400 medley relay for three first-place finishes, and McLachlan, who had wins in the 500 freestyle (4:49.21) and the 1000 freestyle (9:43.97).

Women's

UB 152, Bowling Green 148

The UB women's swimming team improved to 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference and 6-3 overall as it narrowly defeated Bowling Green, 152-148, in its last meet of the season in Alumni Arena Natatorium.

Inger Rooneem led Coach Dorsi Raynold's squad with first-place victories in the 50 freestyle (24.45), the 100 freestyle (53.08) and the 200 individual medley (2:10.45).

Jen Broderick (500 freestyle 5:14.98; 1000 freestyle-10:59.96) and Lieselle Trinidad (100 butterfly-58:37; 200 butterfly-2:11.76) had two first-place finishes apiece.

Wrestling

New York State Collegiate Championships

The UB wrestling team finished third out of 21 teams in the New York State Collegiate Championships held at Binghamton.

Jacob Schaus was the Bulls' lone champion, finishing in first place in the 174-pound division. Schaus finished with a 4-0 record in the tournament and used a 2-0 decision over Dan Perry of Oneonta to take the championship. Schaus also recorded falls in his first three wins of the tournament.

Brian Schaal took second place in the 125-pound division. He finished with three wins-two by falls and one by technical fall-before losing to Aaron Taylor of Cornell in the championship.

John Eschenfelder took third place with an incredible performance in the heavyweight division. Eschenfelder lost his second match and had to come through the consolation bracket. He finished with a 5-1 record, winning all five matches by fall. Three of those five were falls in the first minute.

The Bulls finished third with a score of 122. Cornell won the championship with 188 points and Hofstra finished second with 147.5. Columbia finished behind UB in fourth place with 99.5 points.
