Welch, Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. The college awards the degree master of military art and science. Each year, nine individuals are invited to join the board of distinguished civilian educators who advise the institution on its policies, programs and practices.

Shambhu Upadhyaya, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a $25,000 grant by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research to conduct research on information survivability in distributed computing systems. Information assurance in the wake of abuse and malicious attacks is an important issue in today's distributed systems. Upadhyaya's research addresses the development of a new, online intrusion detection and restoration scheme based on a signaturing mechanism. The funds will be used to continue the research Upadhyaya began at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y., last summer, as well as work he has conducted on the development of a prototype system.

Dorothy F. Glass, professor of art history, has been appointed Chair of the Committee on Professional Development of the Medieval Academy of America. The committee seeks to assist those at the beginning of their careers, as well as independent scholars.

Czeslaw Z. Prokopczyk, assistant professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and director of the Center for Polish Studies, is the editor of a new book, "Bruno Schulz: New Documents and Interpretations," published by Peter Lang Publishing. Most of the authors who have contributed to the volume concerning this major 20th century writer are or have been associated with UB, including Henry Sussman, professor and associate dean and director of the comparative literature program in the College of Arts and Sciences; the late Peter Heller, professor of German and comparative literature, and professors Judith Dompkowski and Dorota Glowacka, who obtained their doctorates from UB.
