Summer fun on the Web

As the spring semester closes, we look forward to another summer rich with Western New York events and festivals. Last year's Electronic Highways column "Summer Clicks In" http://www.buffalo.edu/reporter/vol30/vol30n30/eh.html discussed some of the area's cultural happenings and institutions. The addresses for the Web sites mentioned in that column are still valid as of this writing; here are some additional sites to help you choose your summer's worth of activities.

Buffalo.com http://www.buffalo.com/Arts_Entertainment/FestivalsEvents_17.asp provides links to some of the more prominent regional events and attractions. One connection, A Taste of Buffalo http://TASTEOFBUFFALO.com/, being held July 8-9, is the second-largest food festival in the United States. More than 150 restaurants offer samples of their cuisine throughout the downtown area, along with staged entertainment and children's activities. The homepage includes descriptions and pictures of the festival, and a more detailed schedule for this year will be forthcoming. Also, the Canal Fest of the Tonawandas will take place July 16-23 in North Tonawanda. Its Web site http://www.CANALFEST.org/ features a schedule and history of the festival, which draws up to 300,000 people every year.

If you connect to I Love New York http://iloveny.state.ny.us, click first on "Events" on the menu on the left of the screen, and then check on "Fairs/Festivals"-or any of the 28 choices on the list. Narrow the search regionally by choosing "Greater Niagara" from the pulldown menu below. You will retrieve dates and brief descriptions of upcoming events, such as the Juneteenth Festival and Scottish Festival, and contact information for each.

From the opening page of the Yahoo Entertainment Guide http://guide.yahoo.com you can type "Buffalo" in the box labeled "Zip Code or City" and retrieve a weekly listing of local activities and events. This site is an ideal one to bookmark for future reference to activities throughout the upcoming months-a handy up-to-date events calendar for another enjoyable summer in Western New York.
