Ohio University 101, UB 78

Ohio University simply had too much offense for UB in a MAC pre-quarterfinal playoff game, 101-78, in The Convo in Athens, Ohio.

The Bobcats shot 58 percent from the field to offset a strong first-half effort by the Bulls. In the end, however, UB (4-24) just could not match the Bobcats' offensive firepower as Ohio (18-10) put five players in double figures.

Women's

Three UB players were honored with MAC post-season awards. Senior Sonia Ortega captured the league's Defensive Player of the Year award, while senior Tiffany Bell was named to the All-MAC First Team and senior Mari McClure was named to the All-MAC Second Team. All of the honors were voted on by the league's 13 head coaches.

Ortega is the first player in UB history to earn one of the MAC's specialty awards. She led the Bulls with 79 steals this season (2.93 per game) and tied for the eighth-highest single-season total in school history. Her 251 career steals are tied for the second-highest total in school history.

Bell was named to the All-MAC First Team after leading the Bulls in both scoring (18.5 points per game) and rebounding (7.6 rebounds per game). She finished the regular season tied for the league's scoring lead (18.6) with Ball State's Tamara Bowie, and her 517 points on the year are a UB single-season record. She ranks second all-time in scoring at UB with 1,632 career points.

McClure earned All-MAC recognition for the first time in her career, garnering Second Team honors after averaging 16.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals while starting all 28 games this season. Her .819 career free throw percentage (289-for-353) is the best in UB history. McClure ranks fifth all-time in scoring at UB with 1,156 career points. She also was named to the Verizon Academic All-District I Women's Basketball Team.

Athletes of the Week

Budi Susanto and Fery Kasiman of the men's tennis team combined to notch an 8-6 doubles win and help the Bulls to a 7-0 win over the St. Joseph's Hawks. Individually, Susanto-at first singles-defeated Shawn Farrukh, 6-4, 6-0, while Kasiman downed Mark Spryzynski, 6-0, 6-3, at second singles. The pair has been instrumental in leading the Bulls to their best start in history-a 10-0 mark-as the team heads into Mid-American Conference competition. Faith Thompson of the women's track-and-field team broke a 16-year-old record in her first collegiate outdoor meet to win the shot put competition at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. Thompson's winning toss of 41-10 broke Joyce Kenneson's 1985 mark of 40-10.50. The Bulls finished second in the three-team meet.

Baseball

UB played in the Homestead Challenge in Florida, winning a pair of contests but dropping a doubleheader.

The Bulls dumped Mt. St. Mary's 14-5 to claim their first win of the year. The 14 runs were the most scored by the Bulls since their 15-0 win over Albany last April 30.

UB followed with 5-1 win over St. Bonaventure later in the day. Bulls starter John Sullivan evened his record at 1-1 by spinning a complete-game two-hitter.

Earlier in the week, the Bulls were swept by Boston College 8-5 and 8-2 in a day-night doubleheader.

Softball

Nebraska 5, UB 0

The Bulls dropped four contests to stiff competition at the Creighton Invitational. UB fell to the host Bluejays 1-0 in the opener. The Bulls also were defeated by Drake, 2-1, Minnesota, 8-1 and Nebraska-ranked 17th nationally-5-0. Freshman Breanne Nasti homered for the Bulls' lone run in the loss to Drake.

Track and Field

Men and women place second at Seahawk Invitational

The Bulls opened their outdoor track-and-field season at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.

The men placed second behind host UNC-Wilmington with 135 points to the Seahawks' 198. The Citadel (66) was third in the three-team meet. The women's squad also finished second behind the Seahawks, 253-197, with The Citadel taking third with 37 points.

The men's team won seven of the 18 events. Joe Loiacano tied the school record, winning the shot put with a toss of 51-1. Other winners for the Bulls included Mike Commisso in the 400 meters, Ben Moskel in the 800 meters, Todd Ludden in the 1500 meters, Tim Giagios in the 400 hurdles, Mark Curry in the triple jump and Adam Smith in the discus.

The women won 10 events, with two Bulls setting school records in the first outdoor meets of their collegiate careers. Faith Thompson broke Joyce Kenneson's 15-year-old shot-put mark, winning the event with a toss of 41-10. Laura Olson took the pole vault, becoming the first UB female vaulter to reach 11 feet.

Coach Russ Crispell's squad improved its record to 10-0, with a 7-0 win over St. Joseph's in Orlando as part of the team's spring-break matches.
