Vicki Mitchell, assistant cross country and track-and-field coach, has been invited to join the Fila Discovery USA training program, a program designed to develop American distance runners into elite marathon athletes able to compete with the best in the world. Mitchell will be coached by Gabriele Rosa—one of the top marathon coaches from Kenya who has trained some of his country's top marathon runners—and other top coaches at the Fila Discovery USA training camp, being held in Mt. Laguna, Calif., July 23 through Sept. 12.
Graduate students Elisabeth Ann Perreault, who is beginning the two-year graduate program in architecture, and Marie Carone, now in the second year of the three-year graduate program in architecture, are the first two recipients of graduate scholarships established by Cannon Design in partnership with the School of Architecture and Planning. The scholarships recognize outstanding students pursuing graduate studies in architecture and are intended to enrich their learning environment through collaboration and partnership within the design community. The awards will cover the expense of in-state graduate tuition for one academic year and a summer internship in Cannon Design's Buffalo office.
Dan Ryan, director of the Office of Career Planning and Placement, has received the Edward A. Parrish Award for Multicultural Innovation from the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers. The author of "Job Search Handbook for People with Disabilities," Ryan was cited for his efforts in assisting people with disabilities in their career development needs.
Martin Mutka, associate vice president for university libraries and director of the Library Consortium of Health Institutions in Buffalo, has received the Ovid Integration Award from Ovid Technologies, a leading provider of electronic information to the scientific, technical and medical markets. He was recognized for a redesign of the HUBNET (Hospitals and University at Buffalo Library Resources Network) Web site to ease user navigation, provide multiple-access methods to resources and integrate links to free Web sites.
Thomas Obst, clinical assistant professor and director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in the School of Nursing, was selected "Researcher of the Year" by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Foundation. He will receive the award next month at the association's annual meeting in San Francisco.
Aidong Zhang, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, and adjunct assistant professor of electrical engineering, has been invited to join the editorial board of the ACM Multimedia Systems journal.
