Eastern Michigan 24, UB 20

UB was poised for its second road win of the season at Eastern Michigan before the Eagles turned the tables, scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns and holding on for a 24-20 MAC win.

The Bulls broke open a 10-10 halftime tie with a pair of scoring drives in the third quarter. Sophomore kicker Dallas Pelz drilled a 40-yard field goal—the longest of his career—to cap a 12-play, 57-yard drive on UB's first possession of the second half. After stopping the Eagles on back-to-back possessions, the Bulls went ahead by 10 when quarterback Joe Freedy threw a 44-yard touchdown to junior Maurice Bradford with 3:27 left in the third quarter.

However, the Eagles got back into the game behind the inspired running of freshman tailback C.R. Roberson and the arm of quarterback Kainoa Akina. Roberson finished with a game-high 154 yards on 19 carries, while Akina completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Chris Archie on a third-and-seven play to cut the Bulls' lead to 20-17.

Athletes of the Week

Jerimie Slick of the men's cross-country team earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors with his sixth-place finish at the MAC Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. Slick became the first UB men's runner to nab All-MAC First Team honors with his 25:21.9 showing on the eight-kilometer course. Becky Ashare of the women's volleyball team recorded a team-high 12 kills at Bowling Green and added nine kills with no errors in 24 attempts at Central Michigan. For the week, which included UB's win over Binghamton, Ashare had 30 kills—3.75 per game—and a .368 hitting percentage. For the season, she leads the Bulls with a .267 hitting percentage.

After a UB drive to the EMU 47-year line stalled, Roberson scored on a 16-yard touchdown burst to put EMU ahead for good.

Soccer

Men's

UB 1, Western Michigan 1

UB and Western Michigan played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in MAC men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls now sit at 6-6-2 overall—1-3-1 in the MAC.

Junior Geoff Thompson gave the Bulls the lead with a goal 34:13 into the game. Western Michigan then tied the game with two seconds left in the first half on a one-time volley inside the right post.

The physical match between the two conference rivals included 51 total fouls, eight yellow cards, three red cards and a post-match scuffle.

Women's

UB 5, Canisius 0

A big second-half propelled UB to a 5-0 victory over Canisius in action in Canisius' Demske Complex in the regular-season finale for both teams.

UB opened the scoring at the 63:04 mark of the match as Andrea Sullivan scored on a crossing pass from Jenny Dannecker from 10 yards out.

Later, the Bulls erupted for four goals within eight minutes to seal the win.

Volleyball

Central Michigan 3, UB 0

Sophomore Lindsay Matikosh, freshman Katie Henry and senior Larissa LaCour recorded double-doubles as UB shook off a slow start to down Binghamton University in four games in a non-conference match in Alumni Arena.

The Bulls dropped game one, 30-28, before rebounding to take consecutive games by scores of 30-15, 32-30 and 30-25.

Against Bowling Green, sophomore Becky Ashare had a team-high 12 kills, and sophomore Alexis Bouie added 10 kills, but the Bulls fell to the Falcons 30-26, 30-28 and 30-24.

UB looked to pick up its first MAC victory of the season at Central Michigan, but fell to the Chippewas, 30-23, 30-23 and 30-22.

Cross Country

Men place 5th of 12 teams at MAC Championships
Women place 11th of 13 at MACs

The men's cross-country team finished fifth Saturday afternoon at the MAC Championships held in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Bulls scored 135 points in the 12-team men's championship.

In the MAC Women's Championship meet, the Bulls placed 11th of 13 schools with 271 points.

Two UB runners finished in the top 12 to earn All-MAC honors. Junior Jerimie Slick finished sixth in 25:21.9 to nab First-Team Honors, while junior Todd Ludden was eighth in 25:24.5 to place on the second-team.

Swimming

Women's

UB 189, Siena 92

The swimming-and-diving squad opened the 2001-02 season with a convincing win over Siena, 189-92, Saturday afternoon in the Alumni Arena Natatorium.

The Bulls had first-place finishes in all but one event, although UB raced the final two events and the three-meter diving competition as exhibitions.

Crew

UB's lightweight four squad of Becky Mohr, Gina Hayes, Jess Ecke and Nina Fleck and coxswain Sarah Wold led the Bulls at the Head of the Elk Regatta in Elkhart, Ind. The Bulls finished third in their race in 17:51.45, just behind the University of Notre Dame (17:48.07). A squad from Miami University took first in 17:01.07.
