James W. McKinnon, former music department chair
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1029 Delaware Ave., for James W. "Jim" McKinnon, 66, former chair of the Department of Music and an internationally known scholar of medieval and renaissance music, Gregorian chant and Latin liturgy. McKinnon died Feb. 23 in Chapel Hill, N.C., 10 months after being diagnosed with cancer.

For the past 10 years, McKinnon had been the Richard H. Fogel Professor of Musicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A three-day conference of leading medieval music scholars was held in his honor in Chapel Hill in January.

During his illness, McKinnon completed his fifth book, "The Advent Project," about medieval music and liturgy, to be published by the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to authoring five books on early Christian and Latin medieval music history, he published more than 100 articles in music journals and reference books.

McKinnon a graduate of Niagara University, served in the Army from 1955-57. He earned a doctorate in musicology from Columbia University in 1965, after which he joined the UB faculty. He served as acting department chair from 1968-70 and from 1980-81, and as chair from 1987-89.

McKinnon was a veteran sailor who won multiple Boat of the Year racing awards from the Buffalo Harbor Sailing Club, which named him Sportsman of the Year last fall for his consistent wins and his contributions to the sailboat-racing community.

Stanislaw Mrozowski, professor emeritus of physics
Stanislaw Wojciech Mrozowski, 97, professor emeritus of physics, died Feb. 21 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Mrozowski was a professor in the Department of Physics from 1949-72, when he left to take a position at Ball State University.

He was the author of more than 130 scientific papers and served as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Carbon from 1962-82. A member of the American Carbon Society, he was chair of the organization from 1957-63.

A native of Poland, Mrozowski had served in the Polish Army during the Bolshevik War and received the Cross of Gallantry for Defense of Warsaw and the Battle of Grodno in 1920.

He earned his doctorate in 1931 from the University of Warsaw, coming to the United States in 1939.

A member of the executive committee and a trustee of the Kosciuszko Foundation, Mrozowski was awarded the Kosciuszko Medal in 1981.

Mrozowski was one of only 10 members of the Polish Physical Society, two of the others being Marie Sklowdowska-Curie and Fr�d�ric Joliot-Curie.

Memorial service to honor William Kinser
A memorial service honoring William Kinser, associate professor in the Department of Art, will be held at 11 a.m. March 27 in the Screening Room of the Center for the Arts. Kinser, an influential design educator, died suddenly of a heart attack on Jan. 31 at home in Boalsburg, Pa. He was 67.

A popular teacher who challenged his students and his colleagues as well, Kinser was internationally known as a designer, consultant, advertising manager, art director and illustrator. The award-winning designer had his designs and articles featured in Graphis, Print and Idea, as well as many other publications.

Kinser's family has requested that memorial donations be sent to the Bill Kinser Memorial Library, Department of Art, University at Buffalo, Box 606010, Buffalo NY 14260-6010.
