Basketball

Men's

Bowling Green 70, UB 52
Canisius 62, UB 60

Keith McLeod and Len Matela combined for 37 points on 14-of-24 shooting as Bowling Green shot 57 percent from the floor on the road to defeat UB, 70-52, in a MAC game on Saturday in Alumni Arena.

The Falcons' defense limited UB to 34 percent shooting for the contest.

The Bulls (2-18, 0-11) were paced by Jason Robinson, who had 14 points, and Robert Brown who had his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulls have lost 13 straight.

The Bulls opened the week with a visit to Canisius in a makeup game from November that was postponed by a heavy snowstorm. Unfortunately, after making a stirring second-half comeback, the Bulls were heartbroken in the final seconds as Canisius took the 62-60 win.

Women's

UB 79, Ball State 69
UB 85, Western Michigan 56

Senior Tiffany Bell scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead UB to a 79-69 win over visiting Ball State on Saturday in Alumni Arena. The Cardinals entered the game ranked 33rd in the nation after receiving 21 votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released earlier in the week. The win was the Bulls' third in a row and improved their record to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in the MAC. The Bulls are only the second conference team to defeat BSU (17-6, 9-3 MAC) this season.

Earlier in the week, all four seniors scored in double figures as the Bulls outrebounded Western Michigan by a 52-23 margin en route to earning an 85-56 home win over the Broncos on Feb. 7 in Alumni Arena.

 
Athletes of the Week

Labe Black of the wrestling team earned victories over opponents from Slippery Rock and Central Michigan in leading the Bulls to a two-match split. The freshman defeated Slippery Rock's Anthony Errera, 13-4, and shut out Central Michigan's Derek Phillips, 6-0. Black is now 15-9 overall and 3-1 in Mid-American Conference bouts.

Carrie Quinlan of the women's swim team won two individual events and swam the first leg of the winning 200-freestyle relay to help the Bulls defeat Cornell, 154-144. The junior won the 100 butterfly in a season-best 57.55 and took the 50 freestyle in 24.81. Her 100-butterfly time is the third fastest in the MAC.

Wrestling

Central Michigan 19, UB 12
UB 43, Slippery Rock 3

The Bulls dropped a hard-fought MAC dual match to Central Michigan, 19-12. UB, which won four of the 10 weight classes in the loss, now is 10-5 overall and 3-1 in MAC competition.

The Chippewas rattled off three wins in a row to start the match before freshman Labe Black picked up the first UB victory at 157 pounds, shutting out Derek Phillips, 6-0. Senior Dave Guarino scored a win with a 6-3 decision over Mitch Hancock, ranked first in the MAC at 165 pounds. Senior Josh States tallied his 16th win in a row, decisioning Jeff Pangborn, 3-1, at 184 pounds. Senior John Eschenfelder defeated Jack Leffler, 7-2, at heavyweight.

The Bulls opened the week with their third win in a row Feb. 6, defeating Slippery Rock, 43-3, and taking all but one weight class.

Swimming

Women's

UB 154, Cornell 144

It came down to the final event as the Bulls nipped Cornell, 154-144, to complete their regular season. UB now is 9-5 overall and 3-5 in MAC competition heading in the conference championships being held Feb. 22-24 in Alumni Arena.

Leading by just one point heading into the final event-the 200-freestyle relay-the Bulls squad of Carrie Quinlan, Carrie Armstrong, Tracy Cotter and Abby Delia finished 24-hundredths of a second faster than the Cornell foursome to take the meet. Quinlan and Delia also were double winners individually. Quinlan turned in a season's best performance in the 100 butterfly in 57.55 and also won the 50 freestyle in 24.81. Delia took the 100 and 200 backstrokes in 1:00.20 and 2:08.15, respectively.

Indoor Track

Women place ninth in USTCA Invitational; men finish 11th

The men's and women's indoor track-and-field squads were in action on Saturday at the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Invitational at Penn State University.

The women's team placed ninth of 12 squads with 21 points. Big Ten member Indiana won the team competition with 102.33 points. The men's squad finished 11th in the 11-team field with seven points. Penn State won the team competition with 134 points.

Softball

UB 12, Texas Southern 1; UB 5, Texas Southern 3
Illinois 6, UB 0; Illinois 7, UB 2
Sam Houston State 2, UB 1; Sam Houston State 9, UB 8

UB opened its second season of Division I softball at the McKenzie's BBQ Valentine's Classic in Huntsville, Texas. The Bulls went 2-4 on the trip, defeating Texas Southern twice (12-1, 5-3) but falling to Illinois (6-0, 7-2) and host Sam Houston State (2-1, 9-8).

Tennis

Men's

The Bulls opened their spring season at the Cornell Invitational. Matt Albert was the Bulls' lone singles winner, going 2-1 in the D flight. Albert also teamed with Sean Kelly, going 1-1 in doubles competition.
