A team of 27 environmental design students in the School of Architecture and Planning have been working on a master plan study of Hilbert College. The students have prepared more than 30 sketches of the existing campus and its surrounding environment, including illustrations of the interior and exterior of buildings, statues and other prominent visual features found on campus. The student also have constructed a three-dimensional model of the campus, and conducted a student survey on housing and campus life, an extensive inventory of trees on the campus, and a review of existing buildings, as well as housing and site plans from other colleges and universities. The project, which is expected to be completed in December, is being overseen by Bradley Wales, clinical assistant professor of architecture.
Jack Quinan, professor and chair of the Department of Art History, was presented with the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society's prestigious Owen B. Augspurger Award for 2001 at the society's annual meeting on Oct. 23. The award is presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to local history. Quinan was cited for his scholarly work on Frank Lloyd Wright, his many local lectures, exhibition curatorships and generous assistance to the cause of historic preservation in Western New York, particularly that of the Darwin D. Martin House complex.
The University Press of New England has published a biography of Robert Creeley, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Samuel P. Capen Professor in the Department of English. "Robert Creeley: A Biography, the First Fifty Years in the Life of a Great American Poet," is authored by Maria Trombacco.
Maxine S. Seller, professor of educational leadership and policy, has published "We Built Up Our Lives: Education and Community Among Jewish Refugees Interned by Britain in World War II" (Greenwood Publishing Group). The book details the experiences of 63 former German refugees who were interned as "enemy aliens" by the British government in 1940.
Shambhu Upadhyaya, associate professor of computer science and engineering, has been named associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Computers, the premier journal in the computer field.
Cheryl Runk, a secretary in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering and a member of the Air Force Reserves, received the Air Force Commendation Medal at her unit's most recent training weekend. She was honored for outstanding achievement as a "non-commissioned officer in charge of the military equal opportunity program."
