Mark Lema, professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, spoke at an American Medical Association media briefing on pain management, held today in New York. Lema says that giving surgical patients pain relievers several hours before surgery may not only reduce their pain after surgery, but also may lead to less anesthetic needed during surgery.

Frank J. Krzystofiak, associate professor of organization and human resources, and Philip R. Perry, associate professor of finance and managerial economics, have earned the School of Management's new Jacobs Master Teacher designation. The annual award recognizes SOM faculty who have dedicated themselves to superior teaching and who have earned consistent praise for their performance in the classroom.

Robert E. Baier, professor of oral diagnostic sciences in the School of Dental Medicine, associate professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and executive director of the Industry/University Center for Biosurfaces, will receive the Founder's Award from the Society for Biomaterials at the opening ceremony of the society's annual meeting in April in Tampa. The award recognizes lifelong contributions in a technical specialty area, in Baier's case biocompatibility. Baier also will present a lecture at the meeting entitled "Thirty Years of Thromboresistance: How it has been Obtained."

Anne E. Meyer, research associate professor of oral diagnostic sciences, adjunct associate professor of engineering and director of the Industry/University Center for Biosurfaces, will receive the William C. Hall Award from the Society for Biomaterials at the society's annual meeting in April. The Hall award, named in honor of the society's first president, is the premier award for society members in "active" service to the biomaterials community worldwide.

Susan M. Evenson, a graduate student in the School of Architecture and Planning, was runner-up in an architectural design competition sponsored by the National Center for Seniors' Housing Research in its second annual design competition, Aging in Place: Urban/Suburban Residential Challenges. The goal of the competition was to solicit ideas on "smart-aging" residential design. Evenson's entry in the single-family design category will be unveiled, along with other competition winners, in early May as a "virtual home" at the Seniors' Housing Symposium in Orlando.

The SUNY Board of Trustees recently recognized retiring trustees Erland Kailbourne, Edward Nelson and Bernard Conners for their service to SUNY. SUNY trustees, who serve as unpaid volunteers, are responsible for policy oversight and direction of the 64 campus SUNY system.
