Purpose:

New Faculty Researchers and Principal Investigators in Health Sciences at UB can join via Zoom for a Research Orientation hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences. A variety of presenters representing different resources and offices will provide an overview of the processes involved with establishing, implementing, and maintaining funded research projects at UB. These talks will delve into the various opportunities, responsibilities, and best strategies that will help clinical and basic health sciences investigators achieve research goals and contribute to the success of the university community as a whole.

Intended Audience

Welcome/ Introduction:

9:15 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Human Resources: 

 

Associate Vice President for Human Resources, Christopher Delello, will speak about the process of hiring and onboarding new team members.

9:30 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.

Purchasing and Contract Services: 

 

Director of Scientific Special Projects, June Sokolowski, will speak about how to procure equipment and supplies.

9:45 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. 

Core Facilities and Resources:

 

9:45 a.m.: North Campus Cores and Resources

Associate Dean for Research for the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Sambandamurthy Ganapathy, will speak about the resources on North Campus.

 

9:55 a.m.: Downtown Campus Cores and Resources

Senior Associate Dean for Research for the Jacobs School, Executive Director of the Office of Research, Dr. Marc Halterman, will speak about the resources on the Downtown Campus.

 

10:05 a.m.: South Campus Cores and Resources

Senior Associate Dean for Research for the School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Keith Kirkwood, will speak about the resources on South Campus.

Research Compliance:

 

Director of Research Compliance, Office of Research Compliance, Richard Karalus, will speak about compliance with various regulations (e.g., IRB and IACUC) to maintain the high ethical standards of UB’s scientific research programs.

Clinical Research Office:

 

Medial Director of the Clinical Research Office, Assistant Vice President for Health Sciences, Dr. Sanjay Sethi, will provide an overview the Clinical Research Office, which provides administrative oversight for all clinical research activities at UB.

11:10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Clinical and Translational Science Institute; Community Health Equity Research Institute:

 

Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research, Dr. Timothy Murphy, will provide an overview of these institutes and their roles in health sciences research at UB.

12:00 p.m.: Overview of Research Administrations

Associate Vice President for Research Administration, Jessica Best, will speak about the process of developing and submitting research funding proposals and managing awards.

 

12:10 p.m.: Pre-award services

Director of Pre-award services, Jeffrey Schieder, will present on proposal preparation and submission.

 

12:25 p.m.: Post-award services

Director of Post-award services, Mary Kraft, will present on stewardship of awarded funds to ensure compliance within applicable regulations and policies.

Research Information Systems:

 

Training Program Coordinator, Traci Groves, will speak about the Click Portal, which is used by UB for automated submission, review, and approval of all aspects of research and compliance.

Office of Research Advancement:

 

Associate Vice President for Research Advancement, Dr. Chitra Rajan, will speak about the comprehensive administrative and technical support available to researchers as they form their research teams, identify collaborators, refine their projects, and develop their proposals.

Center for Computational Research:

 

Assistant Director of Industrial Projects and Visualization Services, Adrian Levesque, will speak about the high-performance research computing center offering supercomputing support and on-premise research cloud infrastructure.

Office of Clinical Trial Development and Implementation:

 

Director of the new Office of Clinical Trial Development and Implementation, Dr. Greg Wilding, will provide an overview of the biostatistical analyses and services available to health sciences researchers conducting clinical trials.

Library Resources and Services:

 

Head of Health Sciences Library Services, Elizabeth Stellrecht, will speak about the resources and services available to support members of the Health Sciences Schools

Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences:

 

Associate Vice President, Research Administration and Finance, Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences, Dr. Jill Szczesek, will speak about the administrative support for large and complex proposals for funding across the Health Science Schools.
