UB Health Equity Symposium

The UB Health Equity Symposium featured keynote presentation by Monica Webb Hooper, PhD: Demystifying Health Disparities and the Roles of Community Engaged Science, presentation by Kelly Marie Wofford, MS: The Health Equity Office of 2023 Erie Department of Health Equity Data, and presentation by Karabi Acharya, MHS, ScD, Global Health: Unleashing Our Collective Imaginations: Global Learning for a More Equitable Buffalo. Dr. Allison Brashear also introduced the new Chair of Medicine, Dr. Leonard Egede, to strengthen UB's focus on addressing health disparities. This symposium also included a poster and networking session to showcase the many talents and inquiries of UB researchers. 

Monica Webb Hooper, PhD, Deputy Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at NIH spoke about her collaborative, community-engaged science that seeks to prevent or reduce the impact of chronic illnesses on populations with health disparities.

Kelly Marie Wofford, MS, Director of the Erie County Office of Health Equity, presented her team's 2023 Report on Health Equity in Erie County. Their goal was to assess the current circumstances and challenges to advance the health of our community.

Karabi Acharya, MHS, ScD, Global Health, of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation presented on health equity worldwide. At the RWJF, Dr. Acharya is leading the effort to understand the historical inequities, how health equity is a challenge beyond the US, and how we can integrate solutions from beyond our borders. Her team works to assimilate ideas from around the world and use that knowledge to build a culture of health in the United States.

UB Health AI Symposium featuring Maryellen L. Giger, PhD

The UB Health AI Symposium discussed the expansions of AI in the healthcare world with Distinguished Service Professor of Radiology from the University of Chicago, Dr. Maryellen L. Giger. This symposium also included poster sessions to showcase the many talents and inquiries of UB researchers... and potential collaborators.

Innovation for All by Blackstone Launchpad (CoLab)

This presentation discussed the UB Startup and Innovation Collaboratory powered by Blackstone Launchpad (CoLab) and how collaborating with the CoLab can benefit both faculty and students. Innovation skills and an entrepreneurial mindset are vital in research, the classroom, and applied healthcare settings. The CoLab has proven and adaptable programming that can create valuable experiences for all involved.

Research Partner Possibilities with Independent Health Including Data Access by Jessica Thomas, DrPH

Dr. Jessica Thomas is responsible for directing HEDIS, QARR, NCQA, and Medicare Stars initiatives at Independent Health, which include collaboration among population health risk, medical management, care management and network providers to drive innovative initiatives to improve quality outcomes and ensure member satisfactions. This Q&A session with Dr. Thomas, discussed the resources and databases available when conducting research.

Dr. Leigh Allen, a program officer with the Contraception Research Branch (CRB) of the NICHD, has managed more than $125 million in grants and contracts and administered both pre- and post-award grants. Dr. Allen answered questions and discussed the behind the scene tips to create a successful NIH grant application.

How to Get Funded for Your Aging Research by Stephanie Studenski, MD, MPH

Stephanie Studenski, MD, MPH served as PI of the National Institute on Aging awards for over 20 years, was Chair of three NIA/Aging Study Sections and was a member of the NIA Advisory Council. She also was PI of VA aging awards and served on VA study sections and the VA aging advisory board. Dr. Studenski shared her perspectives on strategies to successfully achieve NIA funding.

Since 2019, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has awarded over $635m to organizations in New York State. Featuring Geoffery Bartlett, PhD, Assistant VP for Corporate & Foundation Relations at UB, this presentation discussed the process for submitting to Mother Cabrini and shared general comments from the program officers of what they look for in successful submissions.

Other Transaction Authority by John Bogdan, PhD

UB Alumnus John A. Bogdan, PhD, is a widely recognized leader and subject matter expert in vaccines and therapeutics for infectious disease. Dr. Bogdan has written proposals in response to Requests for Prototype Proposals (RPP's) funded under Other Transactions Authority (OTA), developed RPP's for the Department of Defense (DOD) for awards under OTA, and has reviewed proposals submitted to these DOD RPP initiatives funded by OTA. This presentation discussed how to secure large-scale funding through the Department of Defense via Other Transaction Authority.
